Calling all Fantasy fans!

Seeing as a Dance of Dragons isn't coming out until Duke Nukem Forever gets a release and I'll soon be nearing the end of A Feast for Crows I need a recommendation for another good fantasy book/series.  I have books sitting unread and my wee bro is already getting me more for Christmas, but I need one more to round off my Xmas list.  Any ( Read more... )

I was going to recommend a few really good ones just then but I've apparently mis-understood what you meant by 'fantasy'! :(

If you fancy a bit of a change from Fantasy then Snow Crash is a fantastic cyber punk novel. Although I bet you've already read it.

Garth Nix' Abhorsen Trilogy is also very good. The first one can be read as a stand alone book as the later two take place after a time skip.

The books go in the order of:

Sabriel

Liarel

Abhorsen

It goes without saying ignore John.

I would recommend some Robin Hobb. Start off with -

Assassin's Apprentice | Royal Assassin | Assassin's Quest

The story of a royal bastard raised to do the Kingdom's dirty work. Kind of like Martin but very slightly higher magic. No fireballs and wizard's staffs just mind fucking and animal talking.

If youre looking for something which is awesome fantasy but also has an incredible about of sex then I recommend Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel trilogy.

Kushiel's Dart • Kushiel's Chosen • Kushiel's Avatar

Story of a girl sold into (high class) whoring who eventually makes good and saves France from the Germans by fucking a Scottish Prince (& Princess) to convince them to come help :)

Assassins trilogy is worth reading.

Then she does a second trilogy in the same world but different characters about living boats. Not as good.

Then she goes back to the Assassin characters for a great third trilogy.

Then she does the Soldier's Son Trilogy which starts of really promising but devolves into not-very-goodness.

Another I forgot to mention is KJ Parkers Engineer's Trilogy.
* Devices and Desires (2005)
* Evil for Evil (2006)
* The Escapement (2007)

Few main characters including an engineer from an technologically advanced city (advanced in that they have fancy catapults and bows not to the level of gunpowder) who ends up starting a war as he leaves the city and teaches his knowledge to the less advanced people who *really* hate that city.

One of the characters is a master manipulator who thinks he has the whole thing worked out until the slightly unsatisfying ending.
