Guess what? Another fanmix. This one is for
waywardmixes's holiday exchange! I picked up
blue_eyed_1987's claim list, and I chose the theme: "Sherlock: the return from the fall." It ended up being half about the aftermath of the fall also... sorry. T.T
BE CAREFUL: SPOILERS AHEAD!
Belong - Sherlock/John - A Sherlock Fanmix
The Series:
Sherlock is a modern adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes mythos (the one with the Private Detective with amazing analytical powers), produced for BBC television. It centers around the odd couple of Sherlock and his best friend, Dr. John Watson, as they solve baffling cases through Sherlock's sheer intelect and John's pragmatism.
If you haven't seen it yet, beware of SPOILERS.
The Characters:
Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant detective with a ruthless analytical mind. He can trace back the events of almost any crime just by looking at their results -- too bad he only gets the cases that really interest him, and too bad he only has the bare minimum of empathy needed not to be shot on sight whenever he walks into a room. His workaholic disposition (he craves the mental stimulation of solving a case, and ignores the world around him while he's working), his tactlessness and possible unidentified disorder (he defines himself as a high-functioning sociopath), make him hard to get along with -- which is why he values the people that stick around so much.
Getting along with Sherlock is the job of Dr. John Watson, an Army veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan and becomes Sherlock's new flatmate in the beginning of the series. At first glance, one might think him to be tired of war and tension -- except he's almost as big of a danger-junkie as Sherlock himself. Being the only sane man of the duo, it's his job to keep Sherlock from offending everyone in sight; being more pragmatic and having nerves of steel, he's also likely to be the one to take the practical solutions and just shoot the perp. He's taken it upon himself to be Sherlock's caretaker for most of the series, and his loyalty to him is pretty much unshakable.
Their friendship is so deep it is often thought to be romantic in nature, something that John is tired of denying, and that Sherlock has never tried to refute.
The Fall:
In the last episode of the second season, Sherlock has to fake his own death to protect John and others who are precious to him. He does this by jumping off a building right in front of John, just before claiming he is a fake to him on the phone. He somehow survived the fall, and is seen watching over John and Mrs. Hudson when they visit his grave in the cemetery.
blue_eyed_1987, I'm sorry if I couldn't keep the mix strictly about the return of the fall... I really felt I had to deal with Sherlock's reactions in the aftermath of the episode as well. You said you didn't mind any shippy slant, and this turned out to be Sherlock/John... I really hope you don't mind! Organizing this mix was lots of fun; thank you very much for the prompt, and I'm really sorry if there's anything that's not to your liking, and that I couldn't do any better than this.

Songlist:
I. The Fall
Too Late | Dead by Sunrise
I'm all alone and I am screaming your name
It seems that's all I can do
But it's too late to turn back now
It's too loud to hear a sound
I'm so lost I can't be found
But it's too late to turn back now
If There's a Rocket Tie Me to It | Snow Patrol
A fire, a fire
You can only take what you can carry
A pulse, your pulse
It's the only thing I can remember
I break, you don't
I was always set to self-destruct though
The fire, the fire
It cracks and barks like primal music
(These two songs deal with Sherlock's disorientation as he's forced to run away and relocate his entire world. He regrets causing John pain, and he feels alone and out of place, but he's also determined to go through with it. His own comfort is an acceptable sacrifice if it means keeping John alive.)
II. The Exile
Going in Blind | P.O.D
Time after time, I walk the fine line (walk the fine line)
Something keeps bringing me back
And time after time, I'm going in blind
Do all these roads lead me back to you?
Home | Nine Inch Nails
I used to know who I was
Until you came along
I return to the place
I've ever felt I belong
To break from what we're tied to
God knows how much I've tried to
(These songs deal with Sherlock in exile, unable to come back home. He tries to keep away from John, to rebuild his life, but he is unable to cope with the distance. He finds himself turning back to Baker Street, and his old life, and John, all the time, to his frustration. He keeps checking on John and is amazed that he still believes in him that much.)
III. The Return - The Fight
Can't Let It Go | Goo Goo Dolls
And maybe my intentions have been misunderstood
I know you feel so beautifully wronged
Some days I can't believe
Others I'm on my knees
Hoping I belong
Kryptonite | 3 Doors Down
You call me strong, you call me weak, but still your secrets I will keep
You took for granted all the times I've never let you down
You stumbled in and bumped your head, if not for me then you'd be dead
I picked you up and put you back on solid ground
If I go crazy, then will you still call me Superman?
If I'm alive and well, will you be there, holding my hand?
I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might
Kryptonite
(Here there's some speculation as to how exactly Sherlock's return will be. It'll probably have something to do with Sebastian Moran, I guess, like in the old series... And if it's anything like The Empty House, it'll involve John trying to solve a case on his own. So Sherlock would swoop in to help (and perhaps save) his friend, and be shocked that, what do you know, John doesn't receive him with open arms, but by being utterly pissed off. These songs are Sherlock's lack of empathy kicking in -- he blames John for not seeing what he's done for him, and doesn't consider how John might feel betrayed by his lack of trust. At the same time, he still cannot let go of John, and tries to get his friend to forgive him.)
IV. The Return - Making Amends
You're All I Have | Snow Patrol
Give me a chance to hold on
Just give me something to hold onto
It's so clear now that you are all that I have
I have no fear, 'cause you are all that I have
Heavier Things Remain (Graviora Manent) | Anberlin
(Weight of the world) The weight of the world is on top of me
And I wouldn't have you anywhere else
(Weight of the world) The weight of the world is on top of me
And I want you here all to myself
(And then Sherlock finally apologizes -- maybe somewhat grudgingly -- and finally comes to realize why he can't let go of John; he loves him. This being Sherlock, it probably won't involve a confession, but an effort to keep John around, to let him know he is important.
And they face the next challenge happily ever after :D)
Again, I really hope you liked it, and I'm sorry if there's anything not to your liking here... Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
blue_eyed_1987!
