Yeah, I'd pay a little extra in taxes for a lot of extra cool transportation infrastructure

Ok, I'm feeling really liberal right now.

I'm finally sitting down to play the A Thousand Visions transportation planning game. In this "game" you are the transportation planner. You get to pick your funding and your transportation projects. So, here I am, looking through the funding options based on what I would or would not mind paying for as a ( Read more... )

They have been talking about a North-South Freeway for 50 years. What have they accomplished? Nothing. They sure like to talk about things and pay their best friends to do a gazillion studies but when it comes to actually doing it? No, let's find an excuse not do it. Then they kick the can further down the road when costs are even higher. Why high costs? Legal fees and red tape, mostly ( ... )

No, they actually have accomplished something. It's complete from Francis to Farwell (so just shy of joining up with Highway 2), and they've been working on the junction with 395 at Wandermere ( ... )

My husband was complaining once about high taxes in Charlotte. I pointed out that thanks to those high taxes, we have a bus system good enough that we only needed one car for nearly three years, AND he didn't need to pay to park uptown. We have a light rail that enables us to not have to drive if we want to go uptown (we can park at the light rail station instead). Some people just miss that their tax money is, actually, paying for things they use.

Amen.
Sometimes I just want to say, "Ok, you don't want any taxes? Fine, we won't have any roads, or police, or fire departments ... let alone a million other things that you USE all the time!"

I also love some of the people here... complaining about all of the "tax dollars" it will take to paint some bike lanes on a road. They have no idea how incredibly cheap that is compared to other stuff. Yeah, so it costs a few million dollars, but the freeway you want so you can get your SUV across town in only 15 minutes will cost half a BILLION. Some more stripes are pocket change, really. Some more stripes will cost you less than $1 a month for limited time. You probably lose that much in your couch.... and you certainly spend more than that paying for gas to drive yourself 1-2 miles to the grocery store, or buying pricy diet foods because you're overweight, and FAR more than that paying your doctor to treat you for things compounded by being inactive.
