Have you ever watched that movie? I rented it twice and was unable to finish it either time.
It has no plot. There is a sort of commentator who "mumbles" along the whole time while pointing out various "personages", commenting on various rooms and making general narration and such. I found the film hard to follow and lacking any historical significance.

Oh yeah, I saw it when it first came out and I have the DVD, which I watched last night hence my desire to go back to Petersburg(love that city). It is an artsy film, so it is given to some abstraction, but the plot is basically that some man, whom we never see, wakes up after an accident and has somehow time traveled back in time to when Peter the Great ruled. He meets another traveler in time called Europe, who represents Europe. They embark on a sort of time travel tour of the Winter Palace moving forward and back, and which is quite well done in my opinion. I believe it is the world's longest steady-cam shot since the entire film is one shot from beginning to end. The choreography involved took months to perfect. Quite frankly it is an ingenious way to show the Winter Palace since this is really a film for that purpose marking some anniversary of the Winter Palace & Hermitage Museum.
