An epiphany

For those who do not know, A friend of mine and myself have been working with Jochim Meyers (1570 German) Cut & Thrust Rapier system. We were both new to the system, and me relativly new to non sca swordplay. My friend has been doing sword related stuff for 8 odd years

i find myself tagerting weapon (or sheild) rather than actually trying to hit the other person.

Oh yes. In a big way. Shield particularly. If I hear the phrase 'stop trying to hit him, and hit him' one more time I'm going to scream. Of course they've got a good point, though.

Another way of thinking about this is to look at defeating the defence.
My perpose is to beat the defence and the result of this is that I will hit the person behind it. Too often by targeting the person, you forget about the active defence in the way.
So do not try to hit some one in the head, look at getting your weapon past the shield in the way...
