Summary: John & Rodney get stuck in an elevator.
Cheynne Mountain: 10:05 hours - MST
John sighed in relief as the doors to the elevator closed, effectively shutting out the entirety of the SGC.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but that was one of the worst de-briefings ever right?” Rodney asked.
“You’re not wrong Rodney,” John agreed.
Rodney hmm’d, pleased to not be corrected. They were currently headed towards the surface where they would be driven to the hotel they would be staying in for their stay on Earth.
“I mean, just because the Earth based gate teams have begun to show an inexplicable amount of idiocy and disregard of professionalism of late, does not mean that we need to be treated with the same lack of respect.”
“I know,” John nodded.
“It’s just preposterous,” Rodney spat out.
“Yes Rodney, I know,” John repeated.
“So what are you going to do about it?”
John whipped his head round to stare at Rodney. “What do you mean, what am I going to do about it?”
“Well, this is clearly a military matter, and the military leader of Atlantis…”
“Okay, I see where this is going,” John interrupted. “And I’m not going to do anything, but smile and nod and let my superiors think that I will follow their every order.”
Rodney narrowed his eyes at him for a moment before nodding his approval and turning to stare as the number of each floor as it passed by.
And that’s when they were plunged into darkness.
Cheynne Mountain: 10:15 hours - MST
“What do you mean there’s a total lockdown?” Rodney shouted into the air.
“Sorry doctor McKay, but due to the security breach, the entire facility has went into automatic lockdown. There’s nothing we can do until we have the matter under control,” a voice told them via the intercom.
“What kind of security breach?” John asked.
“Level five, code blue.”
John frowned as he tried to remember what kind of security breach that was, while Rodney swore under his breath. Turning to face him in the dull orange of the emergency lights, John could see Rodney holding a hand to his face.
“Rodney?”
“Bio contamination,” Rodney told him.
“Right,” John nodded, knowing that if it was to do with biochem, then it couldn’t be good.
“We’ll let you know once we have the situation under hand,” the voice said before cutting out.
Silence fell for a few moments before John elbowed Rodney and pointed to the door. “You wanna try and break out?”
Rodney rolled his eyes at him. “Yes, because it’s so easy to break through three layers of twelve inch thick steel doors.”
“Oh come on, this is child’s play for you.”
“That may be so,” Rodney agreed, “however, the biochem labs are situated on floors twenty three and twenty four.”
“So?”
“So, we’re right between those floors. And considering we don’t know what kind of contamination has happened, I suggest we stay here,” Rodney said.
John huffed, knowing Rodney was right. Throwing his bag down in the corner, John sat himself down beside it. “Well I guess we should get comfortable then. Eye spy?”
Cheynne Mountain: 11:00 hours - MST
“Orange flicky button so isn’t a valid eye spy!” Rodney protested.
“Yes it is. OFB, orange flicky button.”
Rodney rolled his eyes. “You’re insufferable, you know that right?”
John grinned, “Only because you lost and I won.”
“Eye spy has no winners or losers. It’s the taking part that counts.”
John sniggered in amusement.
“And besides, you cheat,” Rodney added in a mumble.
“Well, let’s play a game that neither of us can cheat at.”
“Like what?”
John shrugged, “Thumb war?”
“You’re actually twelve years old aren’t you? Next you’ll be suggesting truth or Dare.”
John gasped in mock horror. “How did you know?”
“Lucky guess.”
Cheynne Mountain: 12:25 hours - MST
“So that was it? No actual reason, just that it ‘wasn’t working’?”
Rodney shrugged. “To be honest, I’m not even entirely sure if she was talking about us or her role in Atlantis. She was never entirely happy there.”
“Yeah, but you guys went out for six months. You’d think she’d at least have given you an actual reason for leaving.”
“Well whatever her reason, I’m over it now,” Rodney said with a wave of his hand.
“Really?”
“Yes… why is that so hard for everyone to believe?”
John, feeling rather warm now with the ventilation not being great in the elevator - although admittedly, it was a lot better than standard elevators - used the removal of his outer shirt as a distraction before answering.
“You said you loved her,” he said quietly. “When you love someone, you don’t just get over them in a couple of months. It usually takes a bit longer.”
Rodney sighed and removed his own outer shirt, using it to mop his brow. “I’m not entirely sure I did love her.”
John stared at him, watching the way Rodney’s frown made him look so much older in the orange light. He had to admit, that while he had never actually believed that Rodney could fall in love as quickly as he had claimed, but it was still a surprise to hear Rodney admit that himself.
“Don’t get me wrong, there was definite infatuation there, but I don’t really think there was much more than that.”
“What makes you say that?” John asked, picking at a thread on his wrist band.
“When you love someone, they should be all you think about. When you see them, you’re entire insides should feel like their on fire, your heart should be trying to burst out of you chest and everything they do should make you love them more and more.”
“And you didn’t have that with Keller?”
Rodney stared at him for a moment before shaking his head. “Not with Keller, no.”
Cheynne Mountain: 13:35 hours - MST
“You’ve never been to Paris? Seriously? Out of all the places you’ve travelled, and Europe was never on your list?”
“I’ve been to Europe,” John shrugged.
“Military bases don’t count,” Rodney told him. “How have you never been to Paris?”
John sighed. “Nancy had hard on for the place, always said we had to go there, but whenever she planned it, I always ended up being called back to duty or something,” he explained. “Then after, it kind of always reminded me of her and it lost it’s appeal.”
Rodney shook his head in disappointment. “I’ll take you there,” he said. “I’ll drag you to all the best restaurants and stuff you so full of croquembouche, all thoughts of ex wives will be forgotten.”
“Aw, Rodney. I never knew you could be so romantic.”
“I have many layers Sheppard,” Rodney smiled. “There’s more to me than just a beautiful face,” he added with a wink.
John grinned at him as they both fell silent for a moment. “Wait. Do I even want to know what a croquembouche is?”
Rodney just smiled.

“When did you last eat?” John asked as he eyed Rodney wearily.
“I had a power bar as I made my way to the gate room this morning,” Rodney admitted as he ran a hand over his sweat covered brow.
John sighed and reached for his bag. “Just as well I come prepared,” he said as he pulled out a pre-packaged brownie and a small juice box and tossed them over to Rodney. “Bon appetit.”
“Thanks,” Rodney grunted as he tore open the brownie. “Not orange?” he asked through a mouthful, pointing to the juice box.
John frowned. “I haven’t drank orange juice in years.”
Rodney’s eyebrows shot up. “Really? I didn’t notice. Why did you stop?”
John shifted uncomfortably for a moment, scratching at the back of his head and wiping away some more sweat to distract himself, before finally crumbling under Rodney’s stare.
“I stopped after that time Caldwell shook your hand.”
“You mean, after he fingered some citrus and failed to wash his hands?”
“That’ll be the one.”
Rodney, confused, frowned down at the juice box. “Why?”
“Well ‘cause, when you took that reaction, it kind of scared me.”
“Scared you?”
“Terrified in fact,” John clarified. “And I realised that I just wasn’t willing to take the risk of losing you, just for some vitamin C.”
“That’s… I think that’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for me.”
John blushed and thanked every deity above that the orange glow of the emergency light hid it. “Yeah, well. I figured it would take too much time and effort to break in a new scientist.”
Rodney gave him a tiny, affectionate smile and kicked at his foot, John kicking back, a smile of his own on his face.
Cheynne Mountain: 16:45 hours - MST
“I’m not doing a dare,” Rodney said. “And besides, how many dares can you come up with in a broken elevator anyway?”
“Well, you just dared me to stand on my head for a full minute,” John pointed out.
“That was actually an experiment.”
“An experiment?”
“Yes, I wanted to see if it would make your hair flat or not.”
John rolled his eyes. “Fine. If you’re going to be boring and go with truth… weirdest sexual experience you’ve ever had?”
“Easy. Serbia, New Years Eve, Millenium, Luka, snow.”
John just stared at him. “You had sex in the snow at the Millenium with a guy named Luka?”
“Yes.”
“And why was that weird? Barring the whole guy thing?”
“Oh like you’ve never fucked a guy. And don’t lie to me, DADT is over now remember?”
“I remember. It’s just, I don’t think I’ve ever known you to have been with a guy before.”
“Yeah, well, I’m picky when it comes to guys.”
John bit his lip, tempted to ask more. However, even though DADT had been repealed, the elevator of a military base wasn’t the best place to have this conversation.
“So why was it weird?”
Cheynne Mountain: 18:10 hours - MST
“Do you have any idea how much longer we’re going to be in here?” John asked the soldier manning the other side of the intercom. “Ventilation isn’t great and we’re out of fluids. Not to mention Doctor McKay is hypoglycaemic and has barely eaten all day.”
“I’m fine,” Rodney mumbled from the floor, which instantly worried John.
“We need to get out of here ASAP.”
“It shouldn’t be much longer Sir. The hazard has been contained. We’re just working on getting all the systems back online.”
“Keep us updated,” John added before going over to sit next to Rodney. “How you feeling?”
“Thirsty,” Rodney muttered. “And tired.”
John sighed and wrapped his arm around Rodney’s shoulder, pulling him towards him so that Rodney could rest his head against him. “We’ll be out of here soon buddy.”
“I’ll be so pissed if I survived six years in Pegasus, just to die of dehydration in an Earth elevator.”
John smiled softly to himself and leaned down to place the smallest of kisses on top of Rodney’s head. “You’re not gonna die. I won’t let you.”
Rodney wrapped his arm around John’s waist, and held on tighter. “Don’t think I didn’t notice the kissing just there,” he said. “We’ll talk about it later, when we’re in a better position to discuss it further of course.”
“Of course.”
Radisson Hotel, Colorado Springs: 21:20 hours - MST
Rodney hastily wrapped a towel around his waist as he climbed out the bath and rushed to answer the door. “Whoever is interrupting my beauty routine better have a good reason,” he said as he pulled the door open.
John stood there with a raised eyebrow. “I can come back later if you’d like?”
Rodney flushed a little, but smiled at him none the less. “No, come in.”
John nodded and followed him inside, going over to stare out at the view of the mountains as Rodney grabbed another towel and began to dry his hair. “You’re feeling better then?”
“Much thanks. Had a shot of that stuff Carson developed. Never felt better.”
“Good,” John nodded as he turned round to face him. “So tomorrow, I got a thing with Dave.”
“Really? What thing?” Rodney asked as he let the towel fall over his shoulder.
“His fortieth birthday party,” John explained. “Should be a lot of important people there.”
“Sounds positively mind numbing.”
John nodded and gave him a small smile. “I know you need to go visit Jeannie, but he gave me a plus one and I was wondering, well… if you want to… I mean, there’ll be a free bar and free food…”
Rodney walked over to stand in front of John, smiling at him knowingly. “This is to do with that kiss earlier right?”
John didn’t answer him, however, his blush said more than words ever could.
“You’re ridiculous, you know that,” Rodney said with an eye roll. “It’s okay if you have feelings for me.”
“Yeah, right,” John scoffed.
“No,” Rodney said, reaching forward to gently cup the back of John’s neck. “It really is.”
They met in the middle, their kiss sparking an uncontrollable heat between them as they pulled each other as close to each other as they physically could.
The kiss didn’t last as long, John pulling back and smiling at Rodney. “So, is that a yes to being my date?”
“Only if you come to Toronto with me after.”
“Deal.”
