DAY ONE
“Come again! We got what?!”
The crew of Serenity were gathered round the table in the galley for Kaylee’s announcement. Not one of them had found it pleasing at all, apart from Jayne and Wash who were finding the look of revulsion on the Doc’s face and his occasional shudders highly amusing.
“Termites Cap’n. In the passenger dorms, just chewin’ their way through the walls down there,” Kaylee told him again.
“Zhen daomei!”
“How is that even possible? We’re in the middle of space!” Zoe asked.
“Must have come in on some cargo or somethin’. Don’t rightly matter now, what does matter is that if we don’t do somethin about it soon there aint gonna be no passenger dorms to speak of,”
“Well, what can we do? How exactly do you get rid of termites in space?” Mal asked.
Kaylee just shrugged.
“I know a trick, my Pa once taught me, kinda like fumigatin’” Jayne said as he sat up straight and tried to remember exactly what it was his Pa had taught him.
“What kinda trick?” Mal asked, eyeing him suspiciously, “If it involves blowin anythin up you can forget it,”
“Aint nothin like that,” Jayne told him. If it wasn’t for the fact that he did like to blow things up with an abnormal amount of enthusiasm, he would have been insulted, “You gotta smoke ‘em out.”
“Smoke ‘em out?”
“Yeah, there’s some sorta chemical or somethin that kills ‘em. Not sure what it’s called but I got a ton of it in my bunk. All we gotta do is cook it an let the fumes do the work,”
“Why is it I aint surprised you got dangerous chemicals in your bunk?”
“What? No Mal, you got it all wrong,” Jayne said as he left the galley and ran to his bunk, he returned minutes later with a box full of tins of gun oil, “I expect to get re-paid for all this,” he told Mal with a triumphant smile as he sat down and watched as both River and Simon took a tin each and read the ingredients.
“Would you look at that,” Simon smiled, first at River who was sharing his smile then at the rest of the crew.
“Look at what?” Mal asked.
“Nicarbazin. It’s one of the main ingredients in most commonly used insecticides and apparently, gun oil.” He told them as he put the tin back in the box.
“So it’ll work?” Kaylee asked.
“Course it’ll work. I done told ya didn’t I?” Jayne said, getting annoyed now, “Look just cause I look dumb, don’t mean I am. If I say it’ll work, it’ll work… only there may be a little problem,”
“What kind of problem?” Mal asked.
“Fumes are toxic, can cause irritation to the eyes, maybe blindness, then there’s sickness, diarrhoea, head aches. It can even affect the blood count in most humans,” River answered for Jayne.
“Ok, so nobody goes near the dorms, we seal ‘em off until the fumigatin is done. How long’s it gonna take anyway?”
Both Jayne and Simon started to answer but once again River bet them to it, “By the time the fumes filter out into the atmosphere, six days, eight hours and fifty three minutes…approximately,”
Sighing to himself Mal, realised he was going to have to find somewhere else to put the Tam’s since there bedrooms would be out of bounds.
“Ok, here’s the deal. We got three bunks that are big enough for two people. Zoe and Wash are already in one; Kaylee has another so River you can bunk up with her for now. I’ve got the other one so…” Once again Mal sighed, for some reason he didn’t think he would be comfortable sharing a bunk with the Doc, but there was no where else to put him… unless, “Simon, you can have Jayne’s bunk, Jayne you’re in with me.”
“WHAT?!” both Simon and Jayne screamed at the same time.
“I am not sleeping in that ape’s bunk. God knows what I’ll catch!”
“Hey, I’ll have you know, my bunk is a helluva lot cleaner than your infirmary, and besides, why I gotta give up my bunk? Why can’t he share with you?”
“Because Jayne, we can’t have the good Doctor sleeping on the floor now can we?” Mal smiled at him, “Anyway, it aint a debate dong ma?”
No one answered him back, but he would no doubt, never here the end of it from Jayne. Maybe he should gag him before he went to sleep. Yup, that sounded like a plan.
“Now… River, Simon you two go and get whatever clothes you can carry and whatever else you need and bring it on up here, Jayne, you do the same. Make sure you leave that bunk nice and comfy for the Doc then come on down to the cargo bay and suit up to help with this. Kaylee, Zoe and I are gonna go get prepped now. And Wash, if you don’t stop giggling I’m gonna make you sit watch over those termites as they die.”
“Sorry Mal, it’s just the thought of you sharing with Ja…” He stopped short at both the growl from Jayne and hard stare from Mal, “I’ll shut up now. Maybe there’s a Reaver ship on the attack. I should go check that out,” Wash said as he made a hasty retreat to the bridge.

By the time Jayne had arrived in the passenger dorms, suit and all Kaylee had already rigged a couple of the cry babies to act like smoke bombs. As she was fiddling with some last minute wiring, Mal and Zoe were emptying the oil into the barrels. Watching them, Jayne felt a pang of hurt. He had saved up to buy that crate of oil with his own hard earned cash, and he hadn’t even received so much as a thank you, no it was a ‘get the hell out of your bunk so the prissy ass doctor can have it’.
“Bout time you got here, we’re almost done.” Mal told him as he saw him approach.
“Yeah well, had to prettify my bunk didn’t I?”
Mal didn’t answer him, just went on to show him how this was gonna work and what his part in it all would be. Once they were all set they made their way over to the passenger dorms doors, which had rarely been shut so were particularly stiff. Closing them so there was just enough of a gap for Jayne to reach in and light the fuses Mal turned to Kaylee;
“We die, I’m gonna blame you,” he told her. She just rolled her eyes at him and watched as the fuses were finally lit and Jayne stood up and helped Mal shut the doors tight.
The four of them stood and watched through the windows for a moment as the cry babies began to smoke. It wasn’t thick smoke but it was enough to let them know it was working. Kaylee had set a timer on the side that would go off once the barrels were empty and no more smoke was being produced.
“Uh Mal?” Jayne asked.
“Jayne?”
“Why am I suited up?” Jayne asked as he finally noticed that no one else was.
“No reason,” Mal smiled at him as he walked away with Zoe and Kaylee who was trying hard not to giggle.
When they got back upstairs it was hard not to notice the complete havoc that was River and Simon trying to manouver their belongings down the hatches of their temporary bunks. It was clear to Mal that they had obviously never used a ladder before. Mal could feel his head starting to hurt with the noise so he turned away from it and headed in the other direction. As it was still fairly early in the afternoon, and it wasn’t his turn to cook tonight, Mal decided to get away from the commotion he could hide in his bunk, which would also allow him some alone time. He had just managed to get his shirt off and had started on his boots when the hatch door opened and a large duffel bag dropped down, followed by a large mercenary with a large box in his arms.
“What the hell Jayne?”
Jayne just raised an eyebrow at the sight of his semi-naked captain before placing the large box in his arms on the floor and going back up the ladder and once again bringing down another box, only this one was actually kinda small, about the size of a shoebox and was padlocked shut.
“Jayne, what the hell is goin on?”
“Look Mal, you were the one that told me to get outta ma bunk. Which is fine, since you’re the captain and this is your ship, but I aint leavin any of my stuff in there for the Doc to either nosy around in or injure himself on. Cause I’ll be damned if I’m gonna get the blame if he manages to shoot himself,” Jayne told him matter of factly as he began to stack his belongings in the corner out of the way.
“…uh, ok. But you could of knocked. I coulda been all naked or anythin down here,”
Once again, Jayne just raised and eyebrow before turning to leave. But just before he disappeared completely he looked back at Mal with a smile and said, “Welcome to the joys of sharin a bunk with Jayne,”

As the crew sat at the table for their evening meal, Mal couldn’t help but survey their moods as he always did. Wash was feeling mischievous, Kaylee was excited as was River, Simon was happy and Zoe seemed pretty much content too. But for some reason he was more focused on Jayne tonight. Jayne had cooked, so the meal was fairly edible for a change. Although the good food didn’t reflect the mercenary’s mood at all. He hadn’t interacted with anyone once they had sat down, or even acknowledged that they were there. He was clearly still pissed at bein thrown out of his bunk and then made fun of by Mal. If he kept this up, the next few days were gonna be hell.
“So Simon,” started Wash, “Found any grossly mutated dead things in Jayne’s bunk yet?”
“Sorry to disappoint, but actually Jayne’s bunk is pretty immaculate. He even took down his girlie pictures and gave me new sheets,” Simon smiled.
“You have sheets?” Wash asked Jayne. Jayne just growled at him before turning to concentrate on his food.
“That’s enough, guys. Jayne’s had a crappy day as it is. Poor man had to give up his gun oil and his bunk then had to cook for ya’ll. So I think ya’ll should be pretty thankful,” Mal told his crew, who all murmured their agreement that they were thankful. But Jayne didn’t look up. Instead he took his empty plate and dumped it in the sink before heading down to the cargo bay to work out.
Mal sighed yet again. Hopefully he would be asleep by the time Jayne decided he was finished with being all broody. But he was wrong.
When Jayne finally decided that he was ready to go to sleep, Mal was already in bed, as was everyone else on the ship, however Mal wasn’t completely asleep just yet and was roused fully awake by Jayne’s presence in his bunk. But deciding he didn’t want to deal with any confrontation just now he kept his eyes closed and pretended to sleep.
He lay and listened to the sound of Jayne removing his gunbelt and other assorted weaponry and then his boots clunked next to where he had put his belongings earlier. Then there was the sound of the duffel bag opening and some soft muttered swearing. Mal tried his best not to smile at Jayne calling his bag a ‘demented monkey from hell’ so he rolled over to try and hide it. However now he was facing Jayne, so he definitely wouldn’t be able to smile or even twitch or the big man would see and know he was awake.
There was a distinct lack of noise as Jayne was clearly waiting to see if he woke Mal up. When Mal failed to move, Jayne resumed whatever it was he was doing in that duffel bag. After a few more minutes, Mal recognised the sound of bare feet against metal as he listened to Jayne walk to the opposite end of the bunk… the end with the shower in it. Clearly Jayne was taking advantage of the facilities, as he didn’t have a shower in his own bunk. And sure enough, within seconds, the sound of running water hit his ears. Once Mal heard the sound of the shower door closing and was sure that Jayne was indeed in the shower he opened his eyes to a slit to see if it actually was Jayne in his shower. Whoever it was had that citrusy smell like Jayne though, so he was fairly positive it was him… when the hell had he started smelling Jayne?
The only light Jayne had turned on was the desk lamp and he had it pointed at the shower so as not to wake Mal up. However it did mean that Jayne was in a sort of spotlight and Mal had a great view. Jayne was standing slightly to the side, leaning into the corner and letting the spray hit his back - his smooth well muscled back. Mal watched the water glide down his shoulders to his back and down over Jayne’s behind. Admiring the way the water swam over the well-rounded muscle, Mal held his breath. It really was a very erotic sight. Jayne turned slightly so that his entire back was facing Mal. This led Mal to notice for the first time a small tattoo that led from the base of his spine down each cheek. It looked a bit like a dragon but he was really to far away to be sure. Mal breathed deeply, knowing he shouldn’t be watching but not being able to turn away. He kept watching even as Jayne grabbed his shower gel and began scrubbing at those well-toned muscles. A strong smell of lime hit Mal’s nostrils. That would be the cause of the citrusy smell then. Jayne was rinsing off the lime-scented soap now and Mal could no longer ignore the arousal he was feeling from watching this man. As Jayne turned the tap off Mal quickly closed his eyes and pretended once again, to sleep.
Once he was dry and smelling a hell of a lot better than he was just after his workout ten minutes ago, Jayne grabbed the pair of boxer shorts and vest he had pulled from his bag before going into the shower. Quietly folding the towel and hanging it over the rail next to the shower, Jayne turned the light off and walked to the bed where Mal was apparently sleeping. But Jayne knew better.
“Look, I don’t care what you done said earlier, but there aint no way I’m sleepin’ on a cold metal floor after the day I’ve had,” Jayne said to Mal.
“How the hell did you know I was awake?” Mal asked, opening his eyes in shock.
“Trade secret,”
Mal just huffed at him before curling up into the foetal position to hide his still noticeable arousal and throwing the covers off to let Jayne in.
“Fine, but you’re sleeping at the wall,”
“Shiny” Jayne said as he climbed over Mal and settled himself in between Mal and the wall.
After a few moments of both of them squirming and trying to get comfortable and not being able to due to the size of the bed, Mal finally cracked.
“Will you quit it!”
“Aint my fault your bed’s so small,”
“It aint small Jayne, your just big,” Mal flushed at the realisation of his double entendre ‘Thank the gods it’s pitch black in here’ he thought, “What I mean is, it aint meant for two broad shouldered folk like us,”
Jayne just smiled at him before realising Mal couldn’t see him. Turning onto his side he used his hands on Mal’s shoulders to gesture that he should do the same.
“Better?” Jayne asked once they were both lying on their sides, Mal’s back to Jayne’s chest.
“Yeah, that’s fine,”
“Good, now quit yapping and go to sleep,” Jayne said as he flung an arm over Mal’s waist so he could get comfier. Mal didn’t protest and they both fell asleep not long after.
