Elena knew the talk had been coming eventually.  For seven months they had avoided really talking about the future and what it meant when his brother found out about the two of them.  For seven months they had blocked out the real world but it was something they couldn't do forever.  Even now it was looming ahead of them with the holidays ( Read more... )

Elijah hated the mere idea of fighting with her, but he also wasn't going to feed her lies about how it would all be all right, when it obviously wouldn't, at least not easily. Klaus was formidable when upset and dangerous when crossed. But knowing he hadn't killed their family, having stood with his siblings against their mother...he was his brother. The sibling he had defined his life around. Even trying to make a life with Elena was a defiance he hadn't truly made before ( ... )

"No." She shook her head at the idea that she didn't have anything to apologize for and she sighed faintly as she looked at him. "I should have trusted you more and listened. I know what kind if man you are, Elijah, and I know that you would never really let anything happen to me." Or whatever family they might have together.

"I should have listened instead of just getting angry and shutting you out. It's just that your brother drives me crazy and I hate the idea that he might do what he did to me to someone else." Like the time he had trapped her at the hospital and took a bunch of blood. Or when he did it again and nearly killed her.

"But you're right. Right now we have to convince him that we're not going to keep me from him." Which was really really hard for her to say.

He gave her a startled look at what she was saying, a frown settling on his face. There was a flicker of shame in that, as well, in thinking that she was the one making the sacrifice, yet again. He wanted to be strong for her, to stand up for her.

He just had no idea how to do that without putting her at risk. Without losing her.

"I think I can convince him not to care, maybe even to...just let it all go, but it will take some time and reassurance. But it makes me a fairly despicable person to suggest what I did, rather than..." He shook his head. "Making a stand or something."

But then who would take care of her?

Okay, it had stung a bit when he hadn't made a passionate plea or a stand in the heat of the moment but that wasn't who Elijah was. He wasn't reckless or bold like that. He thought about the long term consequences and the big picture, he thought of other ways to maneuver around the situation till he could get what he wanted. Plus he was right, Klaus would take great strides against them if they defied him now.

"It's fine." She tried to reassure him. "You're right, we have to play along for now. We can tell him that I'll give him blood sometimes. He has a lot right now but we can make a deal that I'll give him some now and then when he wants it as long as he leaves us alone."
