Ok, having asked around I can reveal that the women on the island keep bees in order to make massive amounts of honey. Because all women make honey as a gesture of patriarchal defiance. Ties it all together so neatly doesn't it?

Remakes of classic films are NEVER justified, but in this case, everyone involved with the project (right down to the bloke who fetched Nicholas Cage's cappuccino from Starbucks every morning) deserves to be EATEN BY KILLER SQUIRRELS.
