+ Court went well. They closed the case-- IT'S FINALLY OVER! I have sole legal custody. Their father only gets supervised visits once he's out of Prison

Congrats on having the custody case closed. That's great!
The courts are impersonal and don't care that you don't have a car (I think it's assumed everyone has one). If there's anyplace to go nearby where you have access to a computer or typewriter and photocopier, you could; no one would mind. Or if you fill the forms out by hand and then have them photocopied, that's cool too. But if there isn't any place or time to do that, you're SOL; clerk's offices aren't set up for the general public to hang out in filling out papers. For one thing, it'd get too crowded.
As for your friend: For some reason, I'm usually the one who initiates contact with people I no longer see day-to-day. It's one of the reasons I don't generally stay in touch; I got tired of always being the one to reach out to them. So my feeling is that if you want to stay in touch, it's up to you to do it, and I wouldn't read to much into the lack of an IM or email.
Nah, there's nothing out by the courthouse. And the bus only comes once an hour so it would add at least another 2 hours to a trip that already manages to take 4-6 hours. I swear, every time I go I have to get up early, scarf down breakfast, pack a lunch, entertain Dustin all the way there... and half the time I still won't get home before my kids because the damn buses are late or missing.
...and that's just going to the local courthouse out here. The one I had to go to for the kid's case was out in Monterey Park and that really did take all day. We'd leave at 6:30 in the morning and get back at 5:45pm.
