This Saturday I celebrated my birthday (belatedly) with a trio of treats. Firstly I went to the BP Portrait Award exhibition. My favourite picture was this one, which seemed to me to have love for its subject etched into every line ( Read more... )

On my way to bed, so just saying HELLO and I can't believe you've never been to IKEA before. Oh, and Daim cake sounds... well, death by dessert seems a good description! ;)

And you get my birthday icon, since I think that Spike + chocolate is always a good combination, no matter how belated!

Hee! I think I was the only person in the world who hadn't. I had no idea it was so exciting.

The Daim cake is beyond words. I could hardly stand after eating it.

And eeeee! Spike + chocolate is always welcome. Always. :)

The trick to IKEA is to have a shopping list and follow it to the letter. Otherwise you end up spending faaar too much money!

And I have some more questions btw, I hope you don't mind? Looking at the terms, it would appear that there's no such thing as half term? At least not in autumn. (But then the term finishes a few weeks before Christmas?) Oh, and you said you lived a bit further out - how did you commute? Walking, cycling, buses? I think there was more, but I've forgotten... *g*

Yes, I see what you mean about a shopping list. I ended up buying a gingerbread house and a reindeer-shaped cake tin, which I certainly never meant to do. Fortunately going on to the theatre afterwards meant I was limited to things I could carry and squeeze under a seat. ;)

And I don't mind at all - ask all the questions you like.

Sounds like a trio of fun belated birthday treats :)

thanks to the third series of The Choir.

My husband, for very vaguely work related reasons, went to a presentation done by Gareth Malone and was half expecting him not to be as wonderful as he is in The Choir, but apparently he is exactly as he seems to be. He got the whole audience of not easily impressed people to sing together and was just generally amazing :)

Oh, I'm so glad! He does seem to be especially blessed with people skills, not to mention all-round niceness and enthusiasm, and it's wonderful to know that's not just clever editing. It sounds a very exciting work-related event! Clearly, I am in the wrong job. ;)

IKEA stands for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd, so yes, capital letters are preferred in my view. But of course, the original meaning is probably getting lost by now, considering not many people would be able to pronounce it much less understand it (it's the founder's name, then the farm where he grew up and the parish where he was born).

We also have Daim ice cream! So I guess you could conceivably have Daim cake with Daim ice cream? Sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen!

I don't know if I wished you a happy birthday, but in case I was remiss, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! =)

Thank you so much, for the birthday wishes and for enlightening me about IKEA. That's so interesting! Ha, I've only been once and already I feel I must be the best informed customer this side of the North Sea. :)

I am trying to think about Daim ice cream and it is too much. My brain just sort of melts.

*points to _jems_' IKEA comment and Daim comment*

Re: Emma. Oh. Another adaption? I mean, I love Austen and all, but... well, I have Emma issues. I remember reading the novel at age 17 and disliking Emma for her annoying... Emmaness. But I admire the book; it's just that I always want to shout at the main character.

Happy belated birthday!

There do seem to be endless Austen adaptations at the moment, and Emmas especially! It is the perfect way to finish off a weekend though - Monday mornings do come easier when set up with a nice evening's Austen-based banter, and some period boots. :) Personally, I like Emma, but do spend a lot of the book wanting to shout at her nevertheless!

And thank you for the birthday wishes!
