Not having had a dog as a child, I'm frequently reminded by ours that canines need quite a lot more water than cats.  Although the cat and dog are fed on different floors of our Millwoods split-level, they drink from the same water dish-- the one connected to the dog's food dish, as it happens

They will look out for their little buddies and vice versa. Taz had five teeth removed before Xmas. Usually when one or the other of the cats gets home from the vet they get hissed at by the others and some paw whappage may happen. Lilith just sniffed Taz's nose as he way lying down on his bed, decided he smelled wrong and started to groom and mark him.
