I'm putting these things here, because since I dropped almost 200 dolla dolla billz on signing up for the GRE, I might as well put all my ducks in a row for PhD applications

U of A is a pretty good school overall, some excellent restaurants and book stores in Tucson and lots of fossilly-stuff all over the state. I hate driving in Tucson at rush hour as the freeway is really only good for bypassing the city, and LOTS of streets flood when the monsoons come. The 3.5 meter mirror of my wife's telescope goes to Kitt Peak occasionally to get re-aluminized, it was built in a mirror lab beneath the U of A football stadium. You also have Biosphere 2 nearby, which is now owned by U of A

I've never been to Tucson, and I'd be lying if I said my heart wasn't pretty rooted in NM right now. ;) Buuuuut, if the geology program fits the bill, it's nice to know that the town has Stuff and Things! :D thanks!
It definitely has great Stuff and Things. Excellent used book store called Bookmans (3 locations), Zia Records for used CDs (both Zias and Bookmans are great sources for music and video), my fav Mexican food restaurant PERIOD at El Charro with more than one location, more than one Trader Joe's, an Apple Store for repairs and help, and some excellent street faires. They also have an annual gem show which books EVERY hotel room in town!
And much better quality movie theaters! And being a college town, a much better selection of movies than the Aviator.
It's a very desert place and there are two cave formations nearby, Colossal and Kartchner. You might find it not so different than NM except for size.
