Comic Book films and Shit

I am sure that most if not all of you may have noticed that there are a frakkin TON of comic book/comic book style films out or coming out this fine summer. Needless to say I'm in geek HEAVEN!

So anyways this is gonna get Geeky so I'll just cut this now.

So It's only fair that this goes in chronological order:

Iron Man:
This was easily my favorite comic book origin film that didn't have Patrick Bateman working out his issues in a rubber suit. Of course this movie is far from perfect the middle act does tend to sag under the weight of not knowing quite what to do before getting to the standard final act. But the most important thing is that even though the structure has problems that stop the film from being brilliant, the overall film works and importantly makes you want more. The effects are uniformly fantastic with the final action sequence showing off how good the ILM designed Mk3 suit is. Oh and if you haven't seen this yet and do decide to see it, stay after the credits for the Coolest. Scene. Ever.

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of Almost Total Disappointment:
The title says it all for me really. Yes there is fun stuff to be had here but the more I think about it the more I realize that the stuff that doesn't work far outweighs the stuff that does, and that saddens me so much. Having rewatched Raiders and Last Crusade recently it brought into sharp focus just why Indy 4 doesn't work, there was absolutely NO reason for it to exist at all, and so everything just feels like it's happening because, well thats what happens in and Indy film. And thats no reason to make a film IMHO.

The Matrix Trilogy:
Ah, watching these again in one go was like putting on a lovely warm coat on cold day! I'm gonna get this out there even though it's probably well known anyway, I love these films. Yeah ALL of them! Granted Reloaded suffers from certain problems that raise their head if it's watched by itself, but watched with Revolutions right after you get a complete story that works well and looks AMAZING (especially when viewed on an lovely IMAX screen).

Batman Returns:
Getting to watch things like this at work is one of the big perks of my job, but watching this in light of my intense expectation of The Dark Knight reveals to me the biggest problems that I have with this film. Namely that this is a fun exciting Tim Burton film but not a very good Batman film. I had almost completely forgotten just how much of a focus this films puts on the villains. It's a frikkin BATMAN film for gods sake! On the plus side there are still some very funny parts in this movie, "Eat floor. High Fibre" has had me giggling quite a bit for a while now :)

Upcoming attractions:

The Hulk - *please don't suck* *please don't suck* *please don't suck* *please don't suck*

The Dark Knight - not a chance in Hell of this flick sucking, but I'll pray to some Dark Gods just in case ;)

Hellboy 2 - Got tickets to the premiere! I have no real expectations for this one, the first was fun so this should be good as well. That Del Toro bloke aint let me down so far!

Hancock - This was completely off my radar until a few weeks ago, so it may end up being a big summer surprise, or it could suck.

Wanted - Apparently nothing like the comic book that inspired it but it's by the guy that directed Nightwatch and Daywatch so it's gonna look Stunning.

And in other news we're moving house! A nice 2 bed in sunny Isleworth, where the 2nd bedroom (a single room) has been Officially christened "The Gav Cave". The place looks lovely and Helen and myself are both looking forward to having a nice new flat!

I'll potentially be back on here on Saturday after seeing The Incredible Hulk in IMAX (well with a Hulk movie it has to be Imax doesn't it?).

Vaya Con Dios!
