In this case, I'd forget it. You had every intention of paying for it. She screwed up. Going back may cause ramifications. If anyone asks, tell them you ran it over. :-)
I say go back, but my coworker agrees with James for the same reasons he has stated. Personally, the idea of someone acting in such an unprofessional way at their job pisses me off, so I would go back, pay for it, and answer any questions that may arise in an honest manner.
Honestly, though, I suspect that they'll just consider it a routine mix-up and not ask for details. They're not going to give you a hard time for wanting to give them money.

You did not steal the rabbit. Technically, the cashier did and then gave it to you...err...told you to just get it out of her sight or something.
However, you are in possession of stolen goods ;)
Then again, sine the cashier is the only real agent of the company owning the store that you likely have contact with, technically the store gave it to you...so it's not stolen :D
There! All better!
So unless you are interested in causing paperwork for the satore, potentially letting them know they have an ignorant cashier, and taking your hard won rabbit on another expedition....I'd leave it be.
Before my Uncle came to Canada from Germany. He use to hunt rabbit as a supplement to his family's diet. The thing of it is that they ate so much rabbit that he got sick of it and went into a farmer's field and shot a calf. He hacked the thing in half and dragged it home.
He was well aware of the fact that he was going to get caught for it but he was so sick of eating rabbit that he was desperate for anything else.
As it turned out, he ended up working off the debt for the farmer.
Actually hunting for your food seems foreign to me. A behaviour that happened ages ago and yet, it's in the living memory of my uncle.
