We talked with two docs at the hospital (an internist in intensive care, where Katrine is right now, and the surgeon who would do the bypass, and the surgeon had also spoken with the oncologist and passed info on to us), and the word is that the bypass can work miracles, but can also have all kinds of complications, which can be managed, but I don't want to put her through managing them! Plus surgery has increased risks given her overall condition; and there's no guarantee she'd have decent kidney function after it, given her preexisting disease and the stress her kidneys have gone through. Even the surgeon who would do the bypass was like, I would not want to be in your position, this is a really difficult decision; reading between the lines, I got the sense he wasn't a fan of doing it. And the oncologist can't be sure, because we don't have much info and can't get more in time, but thinks it's likely to be an aggressive cancer. Which could maybe still be cured with more surgery, or managed with meds, but on the other hand it might kill her in less than six months even if we did the ureter bypass surgery.
I just can't see putting her through all that.
But this has all developed since yesterday afternoon. Fuck this week, seriously.
Geoff has canceled his trip to Toronto, so he can be here; we're waiting for the vet hospital to call back to schedule the euthanasia for later today.
