"The society of late twentieth century America is perhaps the first in human history where most grown men do not routinely bear arms on their persons and boys are not regularly raised from childhood to learn skill in the use of some kind of weapon, either for community or personal defense - club or spear, broadsword or long bow, rifle or Bowie ( Read more... )

I think that comes from 2 world wars and a revolution of instantaneous communication. It did all happen pretty suddenly!

As a dude who regularly gets his ass beat every week, I can say that it sucks when you are like, "oh shit I am dead right now." On the other hand, I want people to feel/be safe, so there is my conundrum!... On the third side, there have been a lot of times when I wanted to punch a dude in the face for being dumb (I think every time I talk someone wants to punch me in the face, though, so it is nice that I am not constantly fighting, mostly).

Japan and Britain (I think there are others too) have also not had arms on them in a long time, and they are doing okay aside from those growing crime problems.

If everyone was capable of defending themselves, wouldn't they be safer?

Ideally, yes! But there are crazy people who I don't want to be around if they can lose their temper and start dropping people so easily. And with the lawsuits and collateral damage and stuff... My personal motto has always been that everyone should at least take some martial arts for defense because I think it avoids a lot of possible problems with guns and basically some problems with anything where you can quickly poke and have someone dead. The problem with it is it's still not very useful against guns at any range greater than 2 feet.

Plus, kids are dumb and are not to be trusted!

You can't control what other people do, only what you do- and I would rather have the gun option than not.
Besides, crazy people aren't inclined to follow laws about guns anyway.

Which fails to address either the topic or the solution. In short, a useless answer.

Truthfully, that response does have a certain aspect of Zen mastery to it.
What IS the sound of one hand making an argument to a blind man?

Ass.

Matt, the atomic number of cesium is not an opinion. I would tell you, "Matt, the atomic number of Cesium is 55," and leave it at that.

Now, if you'd opinied, based on your understanding of power generation technology, that La0.2Sr0.8Co0.6Fe0.4O3 will be the cathode material of choice for fuel cells 10 years from now, I think I would take that as a point of contention, but even given my extensive body of knowledge on the subject, I might be wrong.

My knowlegdge of science is lamentably incomplete, just is your knowledge of history.
Keep in mind that 2nd amendment issues are one of the topics of history that I try to keep informed about, and just because I don't have a degree in the subject, it doesn't make me wrong.
