Re. injuries, self-consciousness, and defense vs. offense, any dojo you'd want to train at will make sure that novices are welcomed, aren't injured, and that it's drummed into everyone that being the aggressor in a fight is a Bad Thing. Pretty much every martial art that I know of teaches you offensive techniques, however (I think aikido was big on bone-breaking moves in response to attacks, but I'd have to look it up to have any confidence in that statement).

Pretty much all of the noteworthy injuries at our dojo that I can think of have been knee injuries due to people trying a sweep when they shouldn't have among the higher belts. Non-issue for lower belts, and mostly for the higher belts, for that matter (I can count the knee injuries on one hand, but not the years I've been at the dojo).
