I underwent my eye examination this morning as scheduled, and my optometrist confirmed that I can indeed still see, but not well enough without an updated prescription. He noted that my 'problem' (probably my astigmatism) has become worse in the last two years, so I'm supposed to get glasses with cylindrical lenses to correct it. Then I'm supposed ( Read more... )

Good luck! I know full well how big a step this is for you. Personally, I'm very happy to see you making it.

I'm sure you'll find one you like.

*blushes and smiles sheepishly* Thank you very much for your encouragement, I truly appreciate it. It was indeed a big step for me to merely go to that class and stay for its entirety, but I'm none the worse for wear. I'm now at least not averse to trying more classes at other dojos. :)

Some of the newer high-index plastics should make coke-bottle glasses weigh less, if you end up needing them. More easily scratched, though.

Re. injuries, self-consciousness, and defense vs. offense, any dojo you'd want to train at will make sure that novices are welcomed, aren't injured, and that it's drummed into everyone that being the aggressor in a fight is a Bad Thing. Pretty much every martial art that I know of teaches you offensive techniques, however (I think aikido was big on bone-breaking moves in response to attacks, but I'd have to look it up to have any confidence in that statement).

Steve's probably already given you the spiel about this, though };>.

Pretty much all of the noteworthy injuries at our dojo that I can think of have been knee injuries due to people trying a sweep when they shouldn't have among the higher belts. Non-issue for lower belts, and mostly for the higher belts, for that matter (I can count the knee injuries on one hand, but not the years I've been at the dojo).

I visited an eyewear store early this afternoon and consulted two opticians there about purchasing new glasses. The gist that I got from them is that Coke-bottle lenses aren't in my future, but I gathered that they still confirmed what you've written here about high-index plastics, as they said my new, stronger lenses wouldn't be thicker or heavier than my present ones ( ... )
