Every stop I make, I make a new friend. Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again. maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down. until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
oops! sorry. I should explain. I got a job as features editor for CanWest's national desk. I got an 11-month contract basically collecting and putting together and copy-editing sections like autos, observer, travel, lifestyle etc, for like 30 papers across Canada. And I get to walk to work, it's right here downtown. I know CanWest is more evil than CTV (well CTV Ottawa anyway, because we have a great union). But at this point, I really need a full time job. I work as a web editor for CTV right now, remember? CTV owns Globe and Mail and that's why I'm writing for G&M. we should go for wings and i can tell you all about it.
yayyy congratulations julie, that sounds like a great job. though i will miss all the ctv gossip.
hey, speaking of globe and mail articles (which you were when you linked to yours, btw i read that the other day and didn't even realize you wrote it - i guess i suck for not reading the writer's names), what are your thoughts on the comment sections that are becoming increasingly prevalent in online editions of newspapers? just a gimmicky thing to try and keep papers relevant on the internet or do they serve an actual purpose do you think?
no no, no one outside of the industry pays attention to names. It's just a smallish industry, so we do because we probably know someone who knows that person or went to school with them, or we do it to be catty, "oh look at Joe Johnson, thinks he's a big shot in Mechanic's Monthly" (or whatever) and when they are intelligent (not "first!" or "fake!") I love comments. The globe ones tend to be smart and it's always nice when they don't start with "what a sad state journalism is in today" like they were when I wrote for the XPress. I think it brings out other issues, things I may not have known or didn't include, gauges people's opinion, plus it tells advertisers about hit counts etc, so there is a darker side to it as well.
