What do you have to be thankful for?

I am thankful that unicorns are in the world again, and that I number myself among them. I am thankful for my restored immortality -- as thankful as I am that I lost it for a time. I am thankful for my ability to understand both love and loss, and to remember the faces of those who loved and lost before me ( Read more... )

"And I am very grateful and thankful to have you in my life. You are one of my dearest friends, beautiful lady."

He knew without question that he would do anything for her, out of love for who she was and not the what. Whether she be Unicorn or Almathea, he would try to be there to help and protect her but he did not say as much aloud. It was something he hoped she knew. Or could feel.

Mister Smith needs no words to describe to her the depth of his friendship; the unicorn believes in it the same way she believes in light, in hope, in love. Honoring this powerful understanding, she offers him no words in reply. She merely steps forward, and with all the boundless faith in her heart, lays her white head on Mister Smith's shoulder.

With a happy sigh, he reaches up to caress her neck as he softly brushes his cheek against hers. For the moment there is nothing but joy and love and contentment in his heart. "I've missed you. I'm sorry I haven't been to the cottage as often as I'd like. I miss your moonlight visits. And our conversations."

His touch cannot tax her, not with his heart so full of joy; and when she finally draws away, it's only because she wants to look on the proof of that joy in his eyes. She doesn't need to see it to know it's there, of course. But there's nothing quite like looking into the eyes of a contented mortal, especially when that mortal happens to be one of your dearest friends.

"I have missed you as well. But I can see that you've been happy, and that makes up for a thousand visits by moonlight." She nuzzles his cheek playfully. "I am only sorry that I did not come to you before. Bliss told me about his sister..." She looks at him shyly, her eyes bright with a secret that Mister Smith will recognize as her smile. "I've heard humans say this to other humans, some not so sincerely as others. But I must say that I can think of no one who is so worthy of such happiness as you."

*bows in respect*

I come from a land where unicorns do live, but to see one is a rare thing. We respect them a great deal.

It pleases me greatly to hear that there are still lands where my people are both known and respected. What is your name?

Liya. *The unicorn inclines her head, her horn gleaming with its own seashell light, her eyes clear and kind.* You seem far more self-possessed than most of the young maidens who come seeking me these days. I do not know what your homeland is like, but I imagine you are a credit to it.
