Hi. I know this is probably not the best topic to get to know you, but it's the first time I've seen you post.

I'm Kit.

Someone, I think it was Aille, told me you're worth knowing.

I'm glad to meet you, Kit. Aille is a dear friend of mine. As for the topic, what I talked about happened to me a long time ago. Nowadays I know for certain that I'm not the only unicorn in the world ... and I've made so many friends here, I'm never as lonely as I once was.

*tilting her head, she looks at him curiously* Are you by any chance a wizard, Kit?

That's good. More unicorns. And friends are always good.

*chuckles* No. What make you think that?

Oh, just that so many of the young people I meet nowadays seem to be wizards. Or at least magically inclined...

Kermit sat on a lilypad in the middle of the Lady's forest pool.

"Never lose hope, Beautiful Lady," he said kindly. "You're not the only unicorn left in the whole wide world, no matter what anyone says."

The unicorn is delighted to see Kermit in her pool, seated on her favorite lilypad, which has looked lonely to her ever since the last resident frog regretfully took his leave ("Magnificent Diptera population you have here," he'd told her--this particular frog was a budding scholar--"but I'm long overdue at Eton.") She moves closer to the pool's edge, arching her neck out over the still water.

"I believe you. And welcome to my forest! I'm so glad to see that lilypad getting some use. Our last frog kept it very well, but I'm afraid it just wasn't roomy enough for him... he was majoring in Entomology, you see, and had quite a lot of heavy textbooks."

"Thank you! I hoped you wouldn't mind. I'm kind of new here, and it's such a lovely pool and the lilypad looked so tempting. It's really comfortable, too," he confessed. "But I can see where there wouldn't be much room for textbooks. I don't think I've ever heard of a frog studying entomology before, unless it was part of a cooking class."

"You're never alone, no matter where you are."

Mister Smith wanted very much to reach out and hug her but never before had taken that liberty without her invitation and wouldn't now. Instead, he stepped forward and held out his arms so that she could see the month old baby nestled within them. Her tiny hands moved up from the light pink blanket that swaddled her, as if he were trying to reach for the beautiful, dazzling white image before her. Could she focus already, even at so young an age? Mister Smith wondered.

"This is my daughter, Brigid," he said, smiling down at the baby. "And this," he continued, nodding to the carraige he'd been pushing, "Is Angus."

Unlike his sister, Angus was quite soundly asleep on his little tummy, his tiny butterfly wings stirring gently with his breathing.

"We're not unicorns," he said with a gentle smile, "But we are your friends and we love you."

Why is there only one unicorn?

There's more than one of us, now. Many, many more. But once, a long time ago, all the unicorns in the world were driven away... except me. So I went to look for the others. And, eventually, I found them.

Yes, like Kit, I don't suppose this is the best time to meet you, but I've long looked for you in your forest, Lady, and I have seen you at last.

My name is Palantiriell, and I would tell you my species if I was sure, Lady. I can't quite remember. Though I like another you have met,I too am a worker of magic.

Lady, there is always hope. So long as we continue to exist, there can never be a happy ending, for nothing ever ends.

You are welcome here, Palantiriell. And I'm glad we've finally had a chance to meet. You needn't worry that this isn't the best time for it -- my memories may sometimes sadden me, but I try not to let that keep me from making new friends, or greeting old ones.

I agree that hope always exists, though it can be difficult to find. Even for unicorns. As for happy endings... *She seems to smile, both wistfully and fondly* A dear friend of mine once said something similar to me. He was also a worker of magic; Schmendrick was his name. I think you'd like him.

I think so too, Lady. I think I'd like him, too.
