I often find myself rooting for the witches and giants in fairy tales because they are often conned, robbed, and slaughtered for no good reason, so I really, really loved this.

And the fairy-tale you used only made it more magical.

I agree! In some stories it's specified that they're evil, but if you read the original text of the Perrault story, it never once says that the ogre (it's an ogre in the original) is villainous. He could be a perfectly nice guy, but we never get the chance to find out. He's just mistreated for being different.

I vaguely remember a fairy tale that went along thee lines but yours was stronger and definitely had a different twist at the end.

Thanks! Yeah, I have a lot of fun writing things like this. I really liked alephz' "Maid of Glass" story which was one reason I wanted to work with him and write fairy tales.
