Where did January go?

Hmm, more than a month since my last post. Where did that time go?

*I've really started to enjoy Pedal People. Like, I love doing the work, if I were to go so far as assign that emotion to a part-time livelihood
*The past 2 weeks have done PP 4 days a week - my back and shoulders (especially shoulders) have been complaining. 2 of those days are ( Read more... )

bicycle, college, handyman, pedal people, wow, canning, bainbridge

I don't know of any colleges that offer courses/degrees in the things you mentioned while you live on campus, but I know of several that will give you college credit and a degree for learning about such things through apprenticeships etc.

Come to think of it, what do you want to learn about those subjects that you think would be better learned in college than on your own?

'cause I can get scholarships from college, silly!

And I'm yearning for a social community that I know college can give me access to - having lots of 28-35 year old friends is great for their maturity, life experiences, and knowledge, but not so great for my dating/finding a life-partner potentiality.

And from what incomplete research I have done, 4 year colleges will grant more financial aid than a technical/vocational school will.

I earn about $10,000 a year, so....

In that case, you probably want to start your search with colleges that offer lots of aid to all their students, not colleges that have courses in that. Then you can narrow down from there which of those colleges let you design your own degree/classes. I suggest fastweb.com for scholarship search, and princetonreview.com for more general college info.

And there are many, many ways to find a dating/life partner that are much, much, much easier than college. Especially if you're looking for someone who has experience doing things like cooking, paying bills on time, and drinking responsibly. (Please note, not saying there aren't people who have experience in those things hanging out at colleges, but I defy anyone to suggest that such people are the majority.)

Oh man, I am so with you: I got a road bike last summer, and I cannot imagine going back to riding a mountain bike everywhere, even with slick tires! I carried my old bike down to the basement recently, and it weighed a ton. Even with the Xtracycle extension, I can tote my road bike around with one hand.

True 'dat! And the "road" bike that I have currently is more appropriately a 27" bike with drop bars - it has a steel frame and steel wheels, so not at all as light as the Cro-moly, aluminum wheeled beauty I bought last spring...and then I got in my first ever car accident with it. ::cries::

Seriously? You're Xtracycle is that light? When you carry it to the bottom of the stairwell at work, it's not that heavy?

The Free Radical makes it about twice as heavy as it was when it was a regular, naked road bike, but it's still easily carried in one hand (and I have really wimpy, weak, girly, t-rex arms). It's very back-heavy, though, so I usually keep a hand on the handlebars to keep it from tipping while I carry it ( ... )

Hmm, if the Free Radical extension doubles the frame weight I'm not sure I'd want one. Have you ever used front and rear panniers? How does it compare with that? Obviously the gargantuan panniers have much more storage space, but I think I'd rather keep my bikes slim and trim for when I don't need to carry a lot.

I don't particularly like how back-heavy my bikes are with two fully loaded Nashbar rear panniers, particularly carrying them across the Bradford St railroad tracks - but putting a front rack on would help that, although then I take a compromise in the sensitiveness of the front fork steering.

That said, I have a 64" Bikes At Work trailer that I own which I use to haul things like laundry, or plants up to my garden plot, or purchases from the farmer's markets.

Which CSAs are you and Tobey members of? Montview and Hampshire, ya?

I had been thinking about becoming a member of Brookfield this season but they're full up.
