It seemed to me like Vaughn ran a more heavily advertised campaign too... at least, I saw more signs for Vaughn than Kennedy on homes and businesses. I wonder if resentment might've played into that too?
What was the anger related to the Kennedy outcome? I wasn't suprised by the outcome, Vaughan has a big profile from his reporting and his dad was a well known councillor. Still indeed a bit of a upset, perhaps punishment for Olivia abadoning her people for higher levels of office?
I was pleased to see that Perruzza finally beat Li Preti up in the North York/York U ward. I worked on that campaign back in 03 to try and beat one of the worst city councillors ever. Finally nice to see it happen.
the controversy was that Chow lent her support to Kennedy instead of Tam Goosen, who was also Chinese-Canadian and a friend of Olivia's, for the NDP endorsement. afterward, a number of Chinese community leaders said that they wouldn't support Kennedy or Chow.
i'm elate for Perruzza, too - i remember voting for him when i lived in north york.
Damn, that sucks. Its not good to be enemies with the Chinise-Canadian community, I hope this won't be a long-term riff. In Burnaby the Liberals pissed off the Chinise-Canadian community and some of their leaders delibierately told people not to vote for the Liberals anymore. If a riding has a strong community they need to be respected.
I figured he had a good shot. I mean, in municipal politics name recognition is everything, right? Well, Adam Vaughn was on TV every day in his career as a journalist, versus some backroom person that I only vaguely recall reading about in Now...
'vaguely'? she was featured in 3 or 4 articles, at least - not all of them were complimentary, but that has to count for some sort of recognition factor.
Ehh, in that case I probably didn't pay attention because it wasn't my riding. And what portion of the voting public in the riding reads NOW, anyways? (and what portion of THAT group skips all the 'news' stuff and heads straight for concert/theatre listings?)
since the number of voters is so ridiculously small, it seems reasonable to suspect that they're well informed (you have to actually make an effort in order to know what councillors stand for), doesn't it?
