'best of' lists...

so pitchfork asked their favorite artists to provide 'best of' lists for the year in music, lists with the expected mentions of stuff like TV on the Radio. what i found particularly striking, though, is that the most popular solo projects were Joanna Newsome and Justin Timberlake - and not for wholly ironic reasons, as a lot of them explain. i actually really like the first 6 songs - and generally hate the rest. pitchfork's review of the album is equally fantastic. so my amusement isn't derived from a dislike of the album - i own it, even! - but from how ridiculously different his album is from newsome's. jt's album is great because of the music, the texture, the tempo, melody, and genre changes midway through a song. newsome, on the other hand, is all about lyrics, storytelling, and narrative, where the music is there to express a tone or emotion but serves little aesthetic purpose.

Well, not THAT many people picked JT, really.

I have to admit, until you put some of his stuff on in the car when we were going to Windsor, I sort of pegged you as being an ironic fan of his work...

the first album? yes, mostly ironic.
the second album? it's actually good.
