"A charming what?" asked Donna, still distracted.

The Doctor turned at looked at her, frowning. As brilliant as his flame-haired companion was in his eyes, she sometimes had the attention span of a flea when he was trying to educate her in the intricate machinations of the universe. He could never give her a full Time Lord's knowledge of how it worked, but he was at least trying to expand her understanding.

"No, Donna, not a charming anything. A charm quark. One of the fundamental constituents of matter. You know, hadrons? As in Large Hadron Collider? This great big  'shooty laser thing' as you so fondly called it?"

They were here at the LHC facility, psychic paper having bought them a chance to see it switched on again after it broke down the first time. Donna wasn't the least bit interested in Quantum mechanics, which was a red rag to the Doctor's bull of geekiness, and for the past 30 minutes he had been attempting to explain what was going to happen inside the accelerator.

"Sorry, what?" Donna finally tore her eyes away from whatever invisible thing she'd apparently been staring at to look at him.

"Have you been listening to anything I've just said?" The Doctor now displayed his deflated face, and she rolled her eyes.

"Yes. Well, no, not really."

The Doctor made a pout, and Donna smiled at him indulgently, stepping forward to grab hold of his shoulders encouragingly.

"Look, I'm sorry, I'm just not that in to all this really in depth science stuff. You sort of lost me at  gluon plasma. And the big shooty laser? Eh, it's not so big."

She winked at him, and he couldn't help but smile back at her.

"Why are we here again? I'm sure there are more exciting things happening out there," she looked up at the ceiling, wishing they were back amongst the stars and not buried under concrete in Switzerland.

The Doctor turned back towards the direction in which they'd been walking, thrusting his hands in his pockets.

"Well, you know me, can't help feeling that something that's trying to create an artificial big bang is bound to go horribly wrong at some point. Thought it might be wise to drop by. You know, just in case."

Donna chuckled. He couldn't help himself.

"Anyway, what could you possibly have found back there that could have distracted you from my detailed explanation of the building blocks of matter? You didn't even let me get around to colour confinement!" He nudged her with his elbow conspiratorially.

Donna stopped again, turning to look back down the corridor.

"I don't know, there was this bloke..."

Now the Doctor chuckled.

"There's always a bloke, Donna! Although I'm not sure a particle physicist is husband material, you can't concentrate on me talking about it, and we're not even married!"

Donna gave his arm a playful wack.

"No, I mean, I dunno, he just looked...familiar. Like I should know him. He looked a bit shocked to see me..."

"I'm not surprised Donna; attractive woman wandering about in a secure underground testing facility? It's positively scandalous!" He nudged her again and carried on walking.

Donna walked backwards for a few paces, still looking back down the corridor, then turned and trotted to catch up with her friend.

Half hidden in a doorway, the young man reached up and swept the unruly mop of dark hair from his blue-green eyes, wanting to catch every last glimpse of Donna as his previous incarnation led her away.
