People read it, they just don't always comment. *guilty as such*
I'm 100% with you here. Icons is but another way to promote the fanart and you DID link back to them. As long as you don't claim it your own there's nothing wrong with it.
Don't pay too much attention to those. Not everyone thinks the way one does.
Like that Spanish say: "No soy un billete de 100 para caerle bien a todo el mundo."

As long as the artist is ok with it then go right ahead. You don't have to give explanations to anyone else.

Heh, thanks. Good saying, too. ^^

And these artists could be thanking me for giving them more traffic from overseas audiences. XD

People don't make money off of doujinshi, they only charge enough money to pay for the supplies and such that went into making the book, they don't make any profit.

Sorry, that had nothing to do with what you were talking about. XD But just had to say it. And I know what you mean. I don't usually make icons out of fanart because I have no way of asking permission, but if I DO end up doing so, I always make sure to link back. It would be rude not to. I guess it all depends on your opinion...

Oh, I didn't know that. It's just... some people charge such... high prices and I'm like. You couldn't get cheaper supplies? >>;

I never really understand why it's NOT okay. For instance fanartists getting 'their panties in a bunch' over people wanting to use their stuff (even in graphics and icons and such). Perhaps recreating other's works to make a profit can be excluded from my view, but fans really do use artists works in the things they do out of love and admiration, and no matter what they do i know if it were me, i'd never deny them that. And it doesn't detract from the artist's work either, in fact it makes them even more well known. Fans like that can be walking billboards ( ... )

It all makes a lot of sense to be honest. It's pretty much spot on with what I've been thinking on that today.

I can understand not wanting people stealing your art and claiming it as their own, but reusing it with permission seems perfectly fine to me. And like several others have mentioned, it seems like it would be a good thing; getting some free promotion for your artwork! (As long as the person using it links back/give credit).

But then again a lot of people get all antsy about their icons on LJ, which is even more ridiculous; taking someone else's art, or some other copyright image, resizing it, and throwing a couple brushes/filters on it is hardly what I'd call a work of orginal art, or anything worth getting upset over. But hey, some people have really strange priorities I guess. Something about the internet leads people to get unnecessarily territorial about a lot of things, it seems.

I guess... though I've made a lot of my icons myself as well, and even though I do take the time to make them, I honestly don't care when I see them crop on other people's journals, random other places, etc.

I guess I'm just a lot more laid back than most people. And it's not like images on the icon are mine to begin with; on this icon, I didn't write to Warner Brothers or Johnny Depp and ask express permission to use this photo of Willy Wonka, so I can hardly claim it as my own, much less ask anyone else to recognize it as such. It just seems strange to me to claim something as your own... when most of it isn't even yours to begin with.
