Happy First Day of School! D:

Sep 02, 2008 08:18

So today as I'm waiting for my dad to drive me in to work, a little girl, Latino, dressed to the nines in a nice black skirt and shirt and carrying a pink vinyl backpack, pauses in front of me and asks me where 1802 Hilliard Road is, because that's where her bus stop should be. It's her first day at her new junior high school, and she's not sure ( Read more... )

Oh jeepers. You sketchy sketchy people... I hope her parents do have kittens for her sake--and that if they get in touch with you they have the good sense to be mollified by your explanations of, y'know, trying to help their daughter get to school safely and on time.

She seemed like a fairly bright kid, too. Just not as much common sense as she really needed to have to be walking to school all by herself. My parents always walked me to the bus stop the first day, not to mention making sure I knew where the hell it was the day before school started. :-/

I doubt her parents are going to go looking for you, but they'll probably have a long talk with their daughter about not accepting rides from strangers, etc. If she's smart, she won't say anything. ;)

LOL, if I were her I wouldn't say anything. "Yep. I found the bus stop just fine, Mom and Dad. Nooooo trouble at all." >_>

Probably having you there was a major sway in her decision, in part because you look younger than you are, and you're, y'know, female. Still not a good common sense thing on her part but she was weighing this decision against the terror of being late/lost for her first day of school, which probably ranks up there with the dream about appearing in class naked.
If the bus stop is further than the school, she might as well be walking... if I were her I would, especially at that age, maybe even without telling my parents. My bus stop was usually pretty damn close to my house, but the bus itself was a level of hell where there was nowhere to sit and the other kids stole my stuff, so I might be biased.

Yeah, she thought I was in High School until I told her otherwise.

There's got to be a closer bus stop. I'm not sure what the bus business was all about.

Told you. ;)

Hopefully she got it sorted out at school. Maybe she was just given the address wrong in the first place...

LOL Don't worry they will forgive you, and I dought they will say anything to you as all you have to say is why would you let your 11 year old daughter walk to to school on the first day all by herself I undersatand they work ect.... but they could have made sure that a friend walked with her or the day before walked it with her. I am sure she is greatful for the rid and I agree with ray I hated the buss more and more each year after grade shcol. This is motherdragon by the way I just used the kid's account to post this to you all. And if anything at all she should never walk it alone anyway that is a sure fire way for something to happen to her.

It's a pretty safe neighborhood in the daylight, but I'd be nervous about letting my kid walk out of earshot of the house in the dark, and it will get dark in winter. I hope they work something out.
