~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: SPARKLING AND PMSING 24/7 Nothing out of the ordinary.
How would they use their abilities?: N/A
Appearance:
Hikaru stands at about 178 cm (5’8”-5’9”) so he’s definitely not short (but in comparison to someone like Mori, who isn’t?) for being Japanese. Usually he has ginger colored hair that he styles rather messily with golden eyes to match. Due to circumstances in the manga, he’s taken to dying his hair black but maintaining the regular styling.
Background/Personality:
The Hitachiin boys grew up in an interesting home environment. Even in their early years, they were both bratty. Their mother was a fashion designer and their grandmother? She was something else entirely. The truth is they didn’t get along with her. So to teach her a lesson, they decorated her hair in a flower arrangement, another talent amongst the Hitachiin legacy. Being part of one of those very wealthy families, that only added to their acting spoiled. Hikaru as well as Kaoru, for mentioning one without the other early on in the series simply cannot be done, were often dressed up as girls. It should come as no surprised, then, that the twins know quite a bit about fashion, make up, accessories, and be talented in those areas. Though that was the case, no one was able to tell them apart, not even their mother. That fact might be what contributed to Hikaru’s growth as a person, being partially hurt by the fact that the person that should know them better, their mother, should be able to tell them apart. What sort of mother can’t tell the two people that she gave birth to apart from each other? Being children, even they knew that concept.
However, they always hoped that someone would be able to tell them apart. That hope was crushed in the form of a nanny they had. She seemed fun, or better than the others. However, she was a thief in disguise. This was the woman that taught the twins very important lessons in life. Through her Hikaru and Kaoru learned how to manipulate others with fake tears and smiles. This would be a skill that the twins would take advantage of later in life. Deception just so happens to be a key aspect of the Hitachiins when they are together and putting forth an act. They played games with this maid, promising the code to the safe if she were to guess them right. Even then they played the “Which one is Hikaru” game to solve everything. Instead of playing, the woman simply stole everything. When caught in the act, she said something that stuck with them forever... No one would ever be able to tell them apart.
Due to that one little statement, their world was thrown into disarray. Both grew into two separate people, yet with a dependence on each other. Their world was divided: them or us. No one was able to get in their circle. No one was able to get through the barrier they created. Hikaru, apart from Kaoru, became a very bitter person, really. On his own, he is actually brutally honest. If he doesn’t like the way things are going, he is not afraid to voice it. Out of the two, he is the one that is unable to really hide his emotions. At the same time, he is not truly conscious of how others are feeling. Really, he just doesn’t care. Everything revolves around Kaoru and him. Part of him is overly protective of their bond as brothers and twins. He isn’t a person that readily welcomes change and is rather clueless about when things are starting to become different. Hikaru excels in more of the sciences, where Kaoru is more liberal arts. He’s rude, blunt, and downright abrasive when he wants to be. He will yell, swear, make passive aggressive comments from the sidelines, and generally through a fuss like child when things are not how he likes them Arguably, Hikaru is the more honest of the twins, wearing his emotions on his sleeves. Deep down, he really hates that part about himself.
However, another instance happened in middle school that changed their perspective ever so slightly. There was this one rather obnoxious boy, Tamaki. He was dead set on telling the two of them apart. Being somewhat amused by the game, they agreed to play. Tamaki got a limited amount of time and he couldn’t randomly guess. Even though he did, the twins were amused at first. It became annoying rather quickly. The twins, both Hikaru and Kaoru, get tired bored of games quite quickly. That is one of the reasons they are called little devils. Be wary of bored twins, for they cause chaos in their wake. This time it was different. Tamaki admitted to never being able to really tell them apart, but stated that being a twin was a blessing. From that point on, the twins were a part of the Host Club. In fact, they used that asset as well as the skills that they learned from that same maid in club activities. Their brother act is truly an act, but they do happen to have fun making others guess if they really are dangerous siblings. Over time, the Host Club, while not part of the “us,” definitely wasn’t a part of “them.”
Even when Haruhi first joined, their intentions weren’t concerned for anything but their own entertainment. Another quip common to Hitachiins: they are very selfish people unless it involves the other twin. She was just going to be another toy, like any other. However, she did the one thing that Hikaru nor Kaoru thought possible: she was able to tell them apart. It wasn’t by looks, for they had their parts covered. She was able to see them for two distinct beings, even if the comment she made was less than polite itself. That would be the first chip in their wall, their first true acceptance that perhaps that barrier between “them” and “us” was becoming blurred. Yet it lead to quite the show, a fake argument that left Haruhi lecturing them both. It simply goes to show that you don’t let the twins get bored. They will get the better of you in the end.
Hikaru, as opposed to Karou, didn’t quite realize where this would end up going. He, unlike the other, is similar to Tamaki in the sense that he’s really pretty dense. Hikaru does not like dealing with his problems. He prefers to ignore them or not even pay any mind to them until they start piling up on top of each other. Only then does the problem become so bad that he literally rubs his hair in a near panic, wondering just what he’s going to do. In this aspect, he is really mature, almost childlike. He also gets highly jealous of anyone that takes his time away from his brother, or later, Haruhi as displayed in his reaction to one of her old friends during summer vacation. He made a rather big scene then felt so bad about it later, but he couldn’t bring himself to apologize. Hikaru is actually prideful, and doesn’t like to admit when he’s wrong. Being abrasive is also a defense mechanism.
The thing to realize about Hikaru is, that he realizes what he’s doing. He knows that what he is doing and how he is acting isn’t right. In fact, he really doesn’t want to be this way at all. Hikaru often calls himself stupid and literally hits himself over it. The problem that he has is that he thinks of himself as stupid and a failure. While he wants to change, all he sees is himself screwing up. Hikaru doesn’t believe in himself enough to actually follow through with any change. There’s a will there to, oh yes, but the application stumps him every time and always sets himself up for disappointment.
Though that little aspect of his personality comes more into light with Kaoru’s behavior. Hikaru was quite content with his life. He was oblivious to his crush on Haruhi and didn’t realize that his brother, that Kaoru, was crushing on her too. Kaoru has this nasty habit of giving things up for Hikaru and it’s not one that Hikaru takes to very well. He didn’t even realize that all this tension was building up until, well, Kaoru brought it to his attention in a very annoying manner. It was, perhaps, their first true fight. This opened Hikaru’s eyes to the problem... He did like Haruhi for more than a friend and so did Kaoru. So... What was going to happen next? Kaoru was pretty sneaky as well, going off and doing his own thing and leaving Hikaru to worry and sulk about what to do. Hikaru even followed Kaoru and Haruhi around on their date though not because he necessarily wanted to ( he was brought there on purpose ), frustrated with his little brother later.
That night changed the both of them. Kaoru was speaking of immediate change. It unsettled Hikaru, but he also realized that the reason that people couldn’t tell them apart was because they never really gave anyone an opportunity to get to know them better. Hikaru was not comfortable with how Kaoru was carrying on, how their twin act at the Host Club would now be something of the past... They would no longer be able to sleep together either. It was too much for Hikaru and he stayed up all night trying to fight with what to do about this. Then he remembered Tamaki and his saying that twins were a blessing. So Hikaru dyed his hair. He took a step up in maturity to realize that growing up does not mean that they have to grow apart. They are twins and that bond is something that will never break.
The only other problem is how to deal with Haruhi. Kaoru aided Hikaru in his attempts to change himself around, as Kaoru was rejected and thus leaving Hikaru the only one to match Tamaki. There is really no significant event for this, but Hikaru really does start to turn a bit. He does tone down his abrasive nature around others and actually works on letting people in. Naturally there are slip ups here and there, but he has become somewhat mild in comparison to the hot head that he was. That doesn’t mean he loses his brashness or bluntness either. Though he was afraid of the answer, he ended up confessing to Haruhi anyway. He didn’t really know if he blew it or not and that set him into a bit of a panic. However, he told her he was not really prepared to hear her answer. It is interesting to note, that while all of the other Host Club members kept their thoughts to themselves about Tamaki, Hikaru tells Tono outright that he confessed to Haruhi. Hikaru was very vocal in stating that Tamaki should shape up and get his head right to and that he wasn’t going to lose. It just goes to show that he still retains his tenacity.
However, at the party he and Kaoru throw, he finally heard Haruhi’s answer. Really Hikaru knew all along that she really does love Tamaki. He’s pretty sure that Tamaki feels the same way, since the both of them are just airheads and not ones to realize this. Though he knows this, he still had to tell her his feelings anyway. Unlike the Hikaru before the dramatic change in perspective, he doesn’t sulk. He doesn’t whine. He doesn’t throw a fit. Instead he is calm, saddened by rejection, but not bitter about it at all.
Hikaru is still childish though, considering the chapter in which he is coming from. The Hitachiin’s really don’t like waking up early. They prefer to sleep in. However, this time Kaoru skipped out to do some things with Kyouya and that leaves Hikaru in a tizzy during his visit with Mori and Honey.

1st person sample:
[ the feed clicks on by accident, Hikaru getting pretty vocal with one of the aliens holding one of the forms. the ones in his own hand are SLAMMED DOWN ON THE DESK, making the poor alien jump, turning an unamused glance up at the teen. ]
I don’t care about your stupid forms! What I need to know is where Kaoru is!
[ and then his glance switches over to the guide. nope. he knows it’s been on the entire time. now the crocodile tears kick in. ]
How can he be so cruel!? Doesn’t he care that two brothers are separated in the far reaches of space!? Ahh! What a horrible big brother I am! I can’t even keep my little brother save from people like Kyoya-senpai.~~~~
Kaoru! Oh Kaoru! Can you ever forgive me!?~~~
[ then the alien just shoves the forms back in Hikaru’s face. he turns a blank face to the guy and looks at the forms... ]
You really know how to ruin a mood...
3rd person sample:
Despite his little network post, Hikaru really was worried sick about his twin. There was nothing about what he said being true, except that he was a horrible brother. Waking up to that note was one thing... Hikaru would even permit for Kaoru to go off and have little brother times with Kyouya-senpai... This was just too much. It made his stomach turn in knots just thinking about how scared Kaoru must have been. Kyouya-senpai or not, Hikaru should have been the one to be there by his twin’s side... Not being there when he was really needed was just revolting. He balled his fists up in pent up frustration. Yes, he knew getting angry about it wouldn’t solve anything. It wouldn’t fix anything. He didn’t even know if Kaoru made it here or not...
That thought made his heart sink. Hikaru didn’t even have the will to move that pencil across the particular form he was supposed to be filling out. Would he... Would he really be separated from Kaoru? What about the others? Would he be alone here without any of his friends and Host Club members?
He probably looked crazy to the other arrivals, shoving his fingers in his hair and just scratching. The older twin was going into a panic mode. His mind just was not able to process thoughts such as that, though he knew he needed to consider all of it a possibility anyway. As soon as he stopped, the rage was just too much to hold back. He slammed his hands down on the surface of what he was writing on, yelling. The Hitachiin didn’t care who was listening. He didn’t care that he was more than likely making a scene. Before, back home, he would chide himself for letting his emotions run loose like this again, but right now? Right now they seemed pretty appropriate for the situation he now found himself in.
“Just who allows for someone to destroy a planet to build a lousy WalMart!? My life is ruined for some stupid reason like that!? What the hell!?”
