Wow. I was just surprised to learn that one can buy WinXP (service pack 3) for the same price as Windows 7. As long as you don't mind the OEM version, intended for the folks building systems.

I've worked with XP and Vista, and my wife's new computer runs Windows 7. They're all at least as reliable as MacOS was, back when I decided to finally get off the Apple II platform, could barely afford a cut-rate Windows, but definitely couldn't afford a Mac.

One thing I have no experience at all in, is running Windows inside of Mac. (See above about cost.)

Oracle, formerly Sun, xVM VirtualBox. http://www.virtualbox.org/

I'm running a Windows XP Pro & Windows 7 Premium system on my RedHat Linux box. ;)

the underlying software is free.

for your XP pro disk set, then upgrade/etc. as you need.

Cheaper the Apple solution, and frankly more stable.

i would use windows XP Home, but *don't* use IE for your browser (i use firefox and thunderbird for my email client). turn off automatic windows updates - those damned things are possibly the worst damned thing to do to your computer. also, don't use MacAfee or Norton Anti-Virus software. i use Avast!, which can be dl'd from the 'net.

and also, good luck on the criminology degree.
