The fact is that there are some people that have to write, and there are some that don't. I'd add that people in general, after getting a good taste of writing, tend to need it more and more.
I'd agree with my Cuban friend. Plus, I wouldn't underplay the "clarifying" factor. Writing helps to get your thoughts (no matter what they're on) down so that you can evaluate them, reconsider them, see how they'd look to others, and so forth.
