Does This Come With Frequent Flyer Miles?

Wow, it's been a super busy couple of weeks. Trip planning, writing, cleaning, car repairs, births, birthdays, writing, trip planning. Umm, what type of grad school sets their deadline for November 2? Don't they know that I will be gone for all of September and October? Why must they torture me into producing an entire portfolio in two weeks ( Read more... )

Awesome! Thank you so much!! It'll give me something to be antsy about in the mailbox - yay!! :D :D :D

Things are going well enough - ever better, on the whole. :) You be safe! I will take photos of fall foliage for you, if you'd like, so you don't miss it entirely ;) [though, I guess it's already started in chicago eh?]

I'm not sure if it's fall-like in Chicago yet (I really love fall!) But I've actually been living in British Columbia for the past seven months. It's quite a long story, but the short version is that on my trip to Europe last September, I met my now-boyfriend, who had just gotten a job in Canada. So, here we are....Just part of this crazy year.

Man. Have a great time, dude. I'm finding it so hard to feel anything at the moment except mad, slavering jealousy. :)

If you happen to stumble into an internet cafe or two on the road, make sure you update all of us stuck Stateside!

(how are you going to find books to read during your two months? are you bringing them with you? or buying them at English speaking shops and then giving them away? or are you just not planning to do a lot of reading?)

I will definitely send out some emails. And hey, let me know if you want something from somewhere in particular. Egypt? S. Africa?

Yeah, the book thing is a dilemma. I've already had to nix a few because they were too big. I'm planning on buying a couple of small ones in Vancouver tomorrow. And Grant and I will probably trade back and forth. I've also downloaded a bunch of stuff to watch on my ipod. I'll need to mix it up a bit on those ridiculously long flights. We are going to be on 14 different plane flights--can you believe it?! I'm thinking about getting "A Thousand Splendid Suns." Have you read it? I want a page turner!

I haven't read that yet actually, but it's definitely on my list. My friend Jared said it's as good as Kite Runner or better. Eek. I'd recommend Play It As It Lays (Joan Didion) if you haven't read it yet... it's fairly slim, and while not a page turner, exactly, the writing is so good that you won't care. Or maybe some Murakami for a little dark intrigue? He's pretty yummy.

If you want true page-turners (not to mention light reading and small-ish books) I would suggest The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I'd never read a single thing of his (not literary enough, or so I thought) but a friend of mine convinced me to try this series and I've been tearing through them. He's good. I'm fairly sure he's going to catch on. Anyway, that series is seven books long, plus he's popular enough that you might be able to find them overseas, too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I loved "The Wind Up Bird Chronicles" but have been having trouble really getting into "Kafka on the Shore." He has some shorter books that I may check out, though. And, yeah, I haven't read Stephen King since I was like thirteen, but I've never checked out thats series, so maybe I'll give it a shot.

I'm so jealous about Halloween! We can only come on the 19-22 so we'll totally miss it. But I'm sure you guys will have so much fun.
