Doyle had slept badly even before the vision booted him into wakefulness with confused memories of something that was almost like a film. Flashes of a computer screen, a vampire biting a girl who stood unresisting, head thrown back and a hand behind the bloodsucker’s head, pulling him close. Flashes of blood spattered across a pillow, of an open laptop on its side; more blood. A different girl reading while the vampire sat beside her, biting her wrist. A child, neck bare…

He woke with a muffled shout and a strong need for a drink. The phone started ringing as his feet hit the floor and he scooped it up before thinking that he really didn’t want to speak to anyone right then. He recognised the voice at once,

“Nixi? Make it quick, would you? I just had another vision and I don’t feel so good. It’s a damned vampire and I can’t do a thing about it and - why do the Powers keep sending the visions, anyway? I can’t do this job on my own! I’m not a proper detective, I’m not even a good fighter. Do you need a partner in the bounty hunter business? You said I needed a proper job - so think of something. I’ll work with anyone!” (words 210)

The small demon’s voice sounded tired, even through the phone.

“You told me already that you can’t have visions to order - could you pick out the targets that might have a bounty on them? Wolfram and Hart might take you if you weren’t so picky about dirty work. You’re a seer and I might even get a bonus for recruiting you. Do you want me to let them know you’d be interested?”

Doyle started to refuse and then paused, thinking. If he tried that he might be able to turn down any job he really objected to, could they make a Seer have evil visions? Would the Powers send evil visions? Could Wolfram and Hart even tell what visions a Seer had? They could surely do something about serial killers, if they wanted to, but the trouble was they’d probably hire them. The phone in his hand squawked,

“Doyle? Are you still there?”

“I was just thinking; don’t tell them anything just yet. I’ll get back to you about it.”

He heard Nixi sigh before she continued,

“Well, there’s another option. Were you serious about being willing to work with the police if it was the only way to get things done now your buddies are gone? Because you might be able to. There’s a police specialist who’d like to talk to a Psychic about some missing girls. Kate Locksey told her about you and …” This time Doyle spoke so quickly that he interrupted her.

“Nixi, are you serious? The kind of company I run with - they’d think I’ve turned informer or something! I can’t - how would you feel if I was working with the police? Micky the Zipper would think… If I did that nobody’d ever trust me again. There’s no way I can work for the police! Ever!”
The conversation went nowhere after that. Afterward Doyle went through his pockets, the drawers and the back of the couch. He found 7 dollars and 3 cents.

When the phone rang again and the stranger started talking to him he agreed to the suggested meeting quite quickly. It helped that the woman had started by telling him,

“I’m a friend of Kate Locksey’s and she’ll tell you I’m not crazy. I’m investigating … something and I wanted to talk to a psychic who knows the … area and about… the … Okay, tell me, do you believe in vampires?” TBC
