Sunrise

In her dreams, there are two suns.

One sun rises over hills of green and brown, but these are the colors of greenery as can only really exist in the manicured topiary gardens of the human mind. Nature's perfections are different from human expectation, for nature works in loose curves, not neat lines. But here, under the bright white-yellow sun of warmth and welcoming, the grass is even and the trees polite, and they let dream Sarah run free to play pretend. There is no need for shoes here because there are no unsuspecting branches on the ground or unhygienic worms to mar the way. This is Sarah's world, and here she takes refuge.

The second sun rises over hills of brown and yellow, but these are the colors of a dried-out world where the earth preys upon any greenery that tries to survive. There are curves and lines in this awkward place, but they move unnaturally across a landscape that does not understand that landscapes are not supposed to move whenever they like it. Sarah finds this second place when she least expects it; she is usually running between the gentle trees of the warm greenery that is hers but when she turns a corner she finds herself suddenly surrounded by the high walls of old bricks that have long turned gone dry from being under the unfriendly sun of this unfriendly world.

Sarah never speaks in her dreams. She's never been good with words (she's perfectly good at reading, writing and reciting, but she rarely knows the right words to say) so in her dreams, the spoken word is gone altogether. So when she finds herself suddenly under the unfriendly yellow sun of the barren landscape, her eyes and unyielding mouth protest without speech, This is not my land. This is not my place. This is not where I want to be.

But a voice that does not speak always replies, You never left.

Then Sarah wakes up and her sleep-addled mouth croaks an automatic, "You have no power over me."

Then she pulls herself to the window of her bedroom to watch the real sun rise, for all the comfort that it can give her.
