Parents?

If you could pick anyone in the world, alive or dead, to be your parents, who would it be and why?

When Sarah was 7, she wished that her father wasn't her father. He'd brutally scolded her for wanting a lovely pink dress with the matching bow headband, and she knew that somewhere out there was a real father who could see that the one thing that would make any little girl happy would be to have a lovely pink dress with a matching bow headband.

So Sarah, upon leaving the store with her face scrunched in and her arms crossed as crossly as she could manage, wished and wished that her father would pop into disappearance and be replaced with someone more loving and kindly and generous like... like...

Well, like Santa Claus. Yes, Santa Claus would be the most amazing father ever, and he'd give her lots and lots of pink dresses, with the matching buckle shoes and lacey gloves. He'd bundle her up whenever she felt cold and laugh heartilly at every joke she'd make, oh and oh, he would so let her ride on the reindeer because he'd totally understand how Sarah is good and trustworthy around animals.

When Sarah's father set her in the back seat and clicked the seat belt in place, Sarah shut her eyes and wished as hard as she could.

Santa Claus...

Santa Claus...
Santa Claus!
She opened her eyes and he was still there. She was inconsolable for the rest of the day, and spent some hours looking at the horizon out the window and imagining the adventures she could have exploring the North Pole.

Later, at Christmas, her father got her the pink dress and the matching bow. It was a loving move perfect for any father of common means, and Sarah should have seen the love in this simple gestured. But, at 7, all children are self-centred and have short-term memories, and all Sarah could think of was how pink dresses were such silly things and that she really wanted the baby blue ballerina outfit.
