"Apology Accepted" by The Go-Betweens is one of the perfect songs. What an emotional epic, I've heard it heaps of times and it still nearly makes me cry. Such a winner

Oh course I'm much more the Robert Forster fan than Grant McLennan. My thoughts on the Go-Betweens... they are;
(i) overwhelmingly male, don't you think? I can't quite articulate why.
(ii) although they set the template for a lot of generic Australian indie-pop (most of it bad), they're different, they have something special (again which I can't articulate) that would appeal to alienated nerdy boys (us?)... for example "Spring Rain" or "Head Full of Steam"
(iii) totally mistaken in reforming... actually I can't think of a good example of a reformation... ever (Suicide is perhaps the only exception?). I bet in five years time Slint will have another three albums out... all of them terrible no doubt.
And now The G-B's are releasing another album! Their last two were terrible.
I'm not sure the Go-Betweens were very male. I'll have to have a think about it. Maybe the fact that they have some feminine influences (ie Lindy Morrison's feminine drumming) highlights their maleness more?
On (ii), it's just that they wrote better songs that you wanted to sing along to. Their guitar parts were superb, and this is what has been lost on their last two albums and in their copyists.
(iii). THis shows what a great cash-in time we live in.
