Take all the courage you have left, wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

Who | Gabriel (painhumbles ) and Michael (viceroyofheaven )
Where | Wellington, Ohio
What | Gabriel tries to warn Michael about Zeus's plan to kill him. ....It doesn't end the way he'd hope.
When | June 20, 2010 (Yeah, Dean, while you're robbing Batman, Gabriel's being stupid)

You'd think dying once would've made him smarter, warier, less prone to actions that could lead to another, more permanent end, but the truth was, Gabriel had made a statement when he stood up to Lucifer and surviving it (in a way) meant that he had something to live up to. That was sort of the problem with coming back from martyrdom- you're expected to actually live up to the ideals you died for.

The ideals he died for had nothing to do with angels or gods, however, and everything to do with humans, but Lucifer had it right. It was all one big metaphor, just like every one of his tricks. Oh, he was fully on Team Human now and loving every minute of it (sarcasm noted) and he respected them for being everything his family wasn't, but when it all came down to it.... He stood up to Lucifer, because he needed to prove he could. He died, because he took a gamble on how far Lucifer's forgiveness stretched.

And when it came down to it, the whole plan he foisted on Sam and Dean had one crucial byline- I want this done without either of my brothers killed.

"I know you think you're doing the right thing, Gabriel, but I know where your heart... truly lies."

Lucifer did have it right.

He touched down in an abandoned paper mill in Wellington, Ohio, evening light filtering in through the windows and casting an orange glow in the darkness. He'd made the mistake of misjudging the landing and wound up in the half of the building that was flooded and he rolled his eyes as he sloshed his way to the dry half of the building, his steps distorting the perfect mirror of the building reflected in the pool. As soon as he hit dry pavement, he noticed the charred ring left over from a holy fire trap sprung by two muttonheads who finally caught wise and forced a certain archangel out into the open.

Here lay the sight of his greatest defeat. Not back in that hotel in Indiana with Lucifer, but here in a half-flooded, abandoned building with its criss-cross of metal support beams that look like cages. The moment he had to come to terms with everything he'd avoided, the first time in two thousand years he ever broke.

And this was where he planned to meet Michael and warn the Right Hand of God that the King of the Gods, himself, had a hit out on him. If Zeus failed, Michael would kill every last one of them and make what Lucifer did in Indiana look like a Lifetime movie. If Zeus actually succeeded... He'd be down a brother. Half of the Dream Team for the final showdown would be gone, and exactly what Gabriel died to try to prevent would have happened anyway.

A selfless act from a being that had always been half-selfish about everything. Michael wouldn't kill him- he'd convinced himself that enough times, he almost believed it. His disobedience was severe, but he knew what the punishment for his level of disobedience was. He'd almost prefer death (again), but like with Lucifer before now, he was taking a gamble. If you ever loved me, you'll forgive me.

That was the sad truth of it, though. None of them ever did love quite like him.

He moved around the blackened circle, trying to focus on the current situation and not what those charred marks symbolized. He'd still be out of the game and in hiding if it weren't for the Winchesters. He wouldn't be here and he wouldn't have been there with Lucifer if that ordeal here had never gone down. But then, he'd still be the Coward of the County, no matter how assertive and dominant he pretended to be, and there's something satisfying about having that little smidge of bravery to back up his boldness.

Of course, that implied he wasn't scared out of his frickin' gourd right now.

His expression twisted into a grimace and he scuffed a section of the scorchmark circle with his foot, attempting to break it for no reason other than his own personal comfort.

Gabriel, the trapped and cornered archangel, doesn't live here anymore.

It's time to grow up.
