I'm starting to notice an imbalance when it comes to education. Not that I feel there was a lack in my own- after all, what more can they teach you when they don't know anything themselves- but that there is an emphasis on education in other places that there isn't where I am ( Read more... )

People can choose their level of education, you know. And it doesn't always equal being smart or anything like that.

Really? What do you mean?

Some people never go to school in any serious way but are smart people. Then there are the people who do well academically but aren't necessarily the sharpest people in the world, they just know how to work the system.

That seems to be what I'm finding.

I was taught by my parents and other family members. I went to the All Systems University when I came of age so that I could become a Commonwealth officer.

Where did you get most of your knowledge from?

There are universities in my place of origin. You learn a great deal from learned professors, although they do not know of all.

What can't they teach you?

They will not teach what they do not believe or do not approve of. Entire schools of thought have been left to rot, merely because they are not in fashion at the time.

I went to University where I got lectured at by a bunch of assholes who really just wanted to research, but had pressure to publish and teach X number of classes to fill a quota for the year in order to work toward and achieve tenure.

The best education I got was after that, in the working world. Interacting with people, seeing what they're like in the public eye versus behind the scenes in their own territory, was always the best. I don't know what everyone else is saying, but it seems to me that people in general are much better teachers than most of the professors that are paid to teach.

There was this author, Mark Twain, who said: "I never let schooling interfere with my education." He understood that professors were just men too, who were prone to the same vices, follies, and faults as anyone else.. but in the occupation of being right, which made it that much harder for them to admit when they were wrong.

That actually...makes sense. And an author said that about schools?

Yeah. Mark Twain, AKA Samuel Clemmens. He died synonymous with classic literature; a lot of people like and respect him. Why? You don't like authors?

[Too casually, with a shrug.] I set both of my high schools on fire and dropped out of college. Buffy and school are generally unmix-y things.

But, y'know, some teachers know stuff. And some are just evil.
