You shouldn't ever feel obligated to drink. You can refuse politely and people need to respect that.

There was a time when alcoholic drinks were the very best people had to offer, so "come have a drink with me" became an invitation for a treat. But now there is clean water, and lemonade, and juices, and teas...

I sometimes drink to expand my mind. But drinking with others is more fun. Many people are so amusing when drunk!
