You Previous and your...holidays. Is there anything that you don't celebrate? Are there months that pass when you don't have to force your beliefs on the rest of us? [There's an annoyed little sigh.] And before you start, I know that it's the Admiral and that most of you don't want this to happen. But this does get old. [There's the sound of ( Read more... )

But you don't quite believe it?

That's alright. And I understand why you... didn't want to talk to me.

No, I don't.

But that's not what I wanted to say. [A pause.] I wanted to apologize.

[Being Canadian, George looks entirely at home in and very pleased by the snow.]

I hope you're well.

[Jane doesn't look pleased, but mostly because she rarely looks pleased. But the walk would be pleasant enough, even in the snow.]

I'm...better now. That coma was not what I wanted to go through.

I was about to say that most people don't celebrate funerals, but that'd be a lie since I know there are people who do.

Do you guys not celebrate anything?

...funerals? Why not?

And not like this. Nothing like this.

It was a religious thing. They believed the person was in a better place so they celebrated.

What are some examples of things you celebrated back where you're from?

Birthdays, to an extent. Hockeyball wins. Winternox.

You believe in that afterlife?

Bells are a frequently used religious symbol. In a lot of religions.

A long time ago, people figured out they could bang one hard thing against another and make a noise that would scare off most large predatory animals. They're not going to like it. They put it in a cone shape, they're going to make it louder. Not only does it scare off animals, but it's a loud sound that can get the attention of other people far away, get them to come toward it.

So, eventually it becomes a superstition, a symbol of safety. Reassurance. You ring this loud thing, you run the stuff that's bad away. You bring the stuff that's good closer. That's the oversimplified version anyway.

That...actually makes a lot of sense, thank you.

But what does that have to do with religion?
