Another normal, uneventful day has come and gone. The conversations at work are sometimes thought-provoking and enriching, though. Heidi, one of my co-workers, is an amazingly sharp and knowledgeable Christian. We often get into these interesting conversations partly because of her. I really respect her. She was delivered from the “New Age” ( Read more... )

Okay, TOTALLY confuzled on the whole infinite thing.....

I'd hate to go through the "land mine" zone in the mornng when i'm not awake yet.... :-/

ahhh. Ya'll have weird, icky , huge bugs down there dontcha? eek.

Yeah, no one will believe me about the different amounts of infinity. :( But, how is that any stranger than different finite quantities? Alas, we're all finite beings that can't understand these things...if they're true at all. =P

Yes, we've got many cool bugs--big and small. Missy probably told you about the black widows (hehe)...

Yeah, it seems to me that the universe could very well be finite, just completely out of our imagination (basically infinite to us). Maybe?

Sounds good to me. I'm all for a finite universe. I was simply using a hypothetical example of an infinite universe to illustrate how there could theoretically be an infinite number of infinite quantities....

My view of the universe is that it "wraps around" if you go far enough--kind of like the surface of the earth. Additionally, I think the universe is so immense that we've not even viewed a fraction of it, yet.

Actually, I have been tutored on this topic slightly before. :-) And you know, it's rather interesting. My Dad was the one who explained one theory to me. Of course, he's got the know-how to do it, because he was a Physics Ph.D. specializing in Light. :-)

Now, the way he explained it, the universe is not in fact infinite. In fact, there are some theories which suggest it is not "endless." Rather, there are very real dimensions to its existence. Granted, there may be more than just the 3 dimensions we understand as well. However, there is also evidence to suggest that the universe is infinitely expanding. That is, growing larger. Really, the universe could not be infinite, because nothing can equal God, and thus, nothing can be truly infinite. Of course, that's pushing logical reason there. :-P So, the end result is that we will never reach the end of the universe, because we can't travel fast enough to catch up, but there is an end, nonetheless. :-P

Well Joel. You're off to a good start.

Writing about interesting things will make interested readers of your journal. Often I'll go through the day, dreaming of a good post to write.

Sometimes I'm sucessful. Sometimes I'm not. It really depends on the day, and whoever finds the time to glance at my entries.

The part about the universe being infinite... I think I tend to agree with Aaron's Dad. It just seems like a contradiction to say there are two kinds of infinite because infinite is the largest there can be.

LOL about land mines.

And. Hm. Nice wasp. =P

Thank you for the encouragement.

Yes...you're right. ... I confess. That's probably one of the strongest arguments against the existence of different infinite quantities. But (hehe), for the sake of argument, perhaps we say infinite is the largest there can be, only because we can't conceive of infinity--and don't know any better.

What boggles my mind is how God in his infinite mind and domain views infinitely smaller creatures like us. We're infinitesimally small compared to Him!

'Glad you liked the wasp. :)
