Character Information
Name: Sabriel Abhorsen, for the purposes of this RP.
Canon Origin/Series: Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix
School Year: 3rd
Gender: Female
Age: 13 14
Birthday: January 13
Out of school living location: A very old country estate near Durham, Northumberland.
Blood status: Pureblood, but spent the majority of her younger years at a muggle boarding school.
Personality: Sabriel is a quiet, responsible girl with good manners and a pleasing smile. She's not necessarily the most talkative, but she's a good listener, and will talk if talked to. She's very self sufficient, considering most of the time she spends at home she's alone, and she enjoys more quiet activities likes reading. (Despite this, she's surprisingly athletic and scrappy, a good flyer and a very good tree climber.) Sabriel isn't completely confident in her abilities despite being rather well rounded in most subjects, and second guesses herself probably more than she should. She's got a mothering streak a mile long and a belief that tea can cure any sadness or bad mood. I'd also like to point out that's she not shy, just quiet. She's perfectly fine interacting with other people. She just doesn't say things carelessly. She's also a rather normal thirteen year old, and acts her age--maybe speaks a little more formally, but other than that.
Canon Background: Sabriel is daughter to the Abhorsen and thus the 53rd Abhorsen--a necromancer who binds the dead instead of raising them. When her father is trapped in Death beyond the first gate, Sabriel must leave her boarding school in Ancelstierre right before her official graduation and venture back into the Old Kingdom, her birthplace, to take her place as the next Abhorsen, find her father, and defeat whatever creature has been breaking the Charter Stones. Upon reaching her father's house, she realizes one of the Greater Dead has escaped from Death, and she and the free-magic creature Mogget begin their trip to the capitol Belisaere.
When the Paperwing (a magic flying device) crashes into an underground burial chamber for the royal family of the kingdom, Sabriel finds a man frozen as a ship's figurehead. She frees him, and he takes on the name Touchstone, because, as we find out, he is a bastard son of the queen who was unable to save his family from being murdered at the hands of the prince Rogir. When Sabriel and Touchstone find her father, trapped in death, they also find out that it's Rogir--now known as Kerrigor, and a free magic wielding greater dead--who has trapped her father and plans to wreak havoc in the Old Kingdom and Ancelstierre. Sabriel's father sends Kerrigor (and himself) back into death, but as long as Kerrigor's body still exists somewhere, he will continue to return from death.
Sabriel is tasked with the duty of finding and destroying the body. The Clayr--a group of women who see the future, although their whens have a tendency of getting messed up--See where his body is and show Sabriel, who realizes it's back in Ancelstierre. Sabriel returns to Ancelstierre, and with the help of the military at the border between the countries and the magic class from her old boarding school, she manages to force Kerrigor back into his body and bind him with the ring that also binds Mogget, thus defeating him and saving the kingdoms.
In the sequels Lirael and Abhorsen, it's revealed that she and Touchstone--who is the last remaining heir to the throne--married after the Old Kingdom was stable, and have two children, Princess Ellimere (heir to the throne), and Prince Sameth (who inherited the Wallmaker's powers). She continues her job as Abhorsen, with Lirael as the Abhorsen-in-Waiting.
Background (AU!Canon; HP): Sabriel's life has not been easy--at least, not in her mind. For some people she has no doubt had a very easy life. Her mother died when she was born, and for the first few years of her life she traveled around with her father, although she was never quite sure of what he did, just knowing it had to do with magic and ghosts and dead people. When she was four, he sent her off to boarding school. Although many children might be upset at this, Sabriel actually loved her school, and she thrived in this muggle community. When he visited he told her stories about his job and taught her about the wizarding world, which she always had questions about. It was no secret that she would be going to Hogwarts when her letter came--and it would come, because she had been showing signs of magic since before she could even walk.
Her father, who goes only by Abhorsen, is an Auror on the international level. Part of why he enrolled Sabriel in boarding school was because his job means traveling all over the world to deal with various problems--particularly those dealing with ghosts and dead things. He also seems to be able to perform strange magic with bells, although it's not something he talks about, even when asked. Sabriel idolizes her father, and will talk about him at any given opportunity.
Despite her love for her boarding school, Hogwarts was a nice change. This was where she belonged, after all, and she loves learning everything she missed about the wizarding world growing up. She's a good, responsible student, and does well in all her classes--although certainly better at some than others. During holidays she returns home and lives with the ghosts and housekeepers that take care of the Abhorsen estate. She has a cat named Mogget (a mean spirited yet sleepy thing) who enjoys sneaking out onto the grounds and hunting.
How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: Despite what she'll tell you, Sabriel is brave. She's morally strong, very proud of her heritage, and good at getting out of sticky situations. She's got a big heart and believes heavily in equality for everyone. She prefers to go out and do something to sitting around trying to come up with a plan. She's good at thinking on her feet.
Hufflepuff: Sabriel is warm and kindhearted, very mother (especially with younger kids), and staunchly loyal to her companions. She's not judgmental (except when it comes to herself) and makes friends rather easily. Although she can sometimes be a bit whiny about things she doesn't want to do, she's a hard worker and doesn't like to give up.
Ravenclaw: Sabriel is actually very smart. She rather enjoys classwork and homework, and reads books on a variety of subjects just for fun. She's very good subjects she can apply to life, but finds theoretical subjects fascinating anyway. She's usually a quick learner, particularly when it comes to spell casting.
Slytherin: Sabriel can be a bit prideful, particularly when it comes to her family and lineage. She's also ambitious, and loves to do well--she loves people acknowledging her talent and worth. She's also very much a natural born leader, but not in the ruthless sense; she's more of a calm, rational leader.
Sample Journal Entry:
Father's letter arrived today! He's in Russia, but he can't share the details of his job. I was a bit worried when his usual letter didn't arrive, but he assures me he's fine, and that sending three letters was unnecessary... But he knows he has to send me letters on time or I worry, and of course I'll send letters if he doesn't.
Also, Mogget brought me a rat today. It was by my bed when I awoke, which wasn't particularly pleasant.
Sample Interaction Post in Third Person:
Although she did well in many subjects, Charms was easily Sabriel's favorite. She loved the simple spells that made life easier, and enjoyed practicing the various spells she'd learned over the years. Tonight, she curled up in her bed, curtains drawn and closed off from the rest of the room, practicing levitation and retrieval with a piece of parchment. With the smallest movement, the parchment would flutter left or right, then back to the end of the bed. She called the parchment back, settling it on the blanket in front of her. Then, she repeated the process again.
It was almost calming, actually; the repetitive motions allowed to mind to relax after the school day. She'd received a letter from her father, finally, which she'd immediately replied to as soon as she'd had a free moment between classes. The letter was a relief, but she still carried the anxiety that had been building the past few days after she hadn't gotten a reply to her last letter. Normally her father was prompt, if short, with his letters, and she was still trying to get over the worry she'd felt. Sabriel was proud of her father's job, dangerous as it was, but she still worried.
From outside the shield of curtains, her candle flickered, and one of her roommates poked her head in between the curtains.
"Sabriel, could you explain our Defense homework? Please? I just don't get this essay..." The girl trailed off, smiling, hopeful. Sabriel let the parchment drop back onto the bed and she nodded.
"Of course. What is it that you're struggling with?"
