I'm trying to think up some last minute xmas gifts for a friend. When I type in the names of his favorite authors on Amazon, Roberto Bolano's "2666" keeps popping up in the recommendation section.

Most of the reviews I can find seem to rave about it. Have any of you read it?

2666 showed up in the rec (or "also bought") section for Celine's "Journey to the End of the Night," Vollmann's "Europe Central," McCarthy's "Blood Meridian," Saramago's "Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis," and Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow."

Those are some of his favorite books/authors. Is Bolano at all similar? I've never read anything by him.

I was thoroughly unimpressed by The Savage Detectives, but I havent read 2666. But Europe Central was lovely, and you cant go wrong with McCarthy

I'm getting my copy today, so I can't speak to whether it's worth all of its hype, but if you are going to give it as a gift, I'd recommend this 3 volume set that's basically the same price.

Nazi Literature in the Americas was one of my favorite books of the year, and I think my 'rents are getting me 2666 for Christmas... I am thoroughly excited. Some of my LJ friends have been doing "process" reviews and they are digging it lots.
