But my husband was on the computer all day (mine died a while ago and there's no $$$ to fix it or to pick up a new one).

Christ. The Well of Loneliness? Really?

I am seriously terrified of what will happen if/when Google really manages to digitize all the books in the world. Esp. since I hear the physical copies usually get destroyed in the process.

I'll alert my mom's partner... she'll probably tell her students.

You're kidding?

Do you have a link for that? That's a really scary thing if true.

It's what my college librarian told us--that they generally chop off the spines of the books & run the pages through the scanner that way. Obviously not for really valuable books & MSS, but I think it's pretty standard. Which would make sense, of course--how else would you digitize all those books? So at least it's just the copies they scan, but still... My librarian was certainly concerned by it!

I was actually just sending him a message asking where he got his information, since it's been on my mind a lot... Will tell you if he replies with something useful.
