Oops, stupid me, wrong book--not really, I think Goffman was looking at 'roles' from a sociological perspective, and Rita Carter is (she says) looking at 'personalities' from a psychological perspective. Since I wrote this post I've decided I don't buy it--I don't see the distinction she's making between the 'personalities' she's positing and our conscious or unconscious choice of behaviour to meet others' expectations under varying circumstances (I wrote a longer and I hope more thoughtful analysis of this in my private journal, to sort myself out on the issue, but I'm too lazy to go look at it now).
