Sitting a top the mound of clean clothes in the middle of his bed, Perry sighs. It’s been almost a week since he last spoke to Rick and he’s starting to go crazy. It’s like the bottom of his world has dropped away and he’s falling. He can never quite scramble back up, because the moment he grabs hold of something to climb his way to the top, the support is yanked away from him. It hurts to think about him, and yet, he can’t stop himself. He can’t quite bring himself to give Rick that orange and navy hoodie back, the one that’s on the very top of his pile of laundry.

His phone buzzes on the dresser, snapping his attention from his thoughts back to the real world. Perry’s eyes narrow as he untangles himself from the top of the laundry pile. He scrolls down to read the message. 1 New Message from Max: dude, we’re goin out. get ready. be there in about 20. Ryan makes a face. He knows he doesn’t have to reply because, even if he does, Max would still show up. He sighs heavily and glances down at himself. Jeans and a tee shirt will have to do. He certainly doesn’t feel like taking a shower at the moment.

Just as promised, his door bell rings twenty minutes after getting the text. He opens the door to find Max standing there in dark jeans and a nice button-up. Again, Perry glances at himself. Maybe jeans and a tee shirt is a poor choice. But Max doesn’t really give him the opportunity to waffle between outfits in his mind.

“You gonna just look at me all night, or are you gonna let me in?” Max asks, an impossibly bright grin on his face.

Max’s been more upbeat lately. Perry has trouble pinpointing the exact reason, but he finds it funny that Max’s sudden new lease on life occurred right around the time Rick decided to… Perry feels his face fall, almost painfully aware of what happens when he thinks about it. He steps back from the door to let Max in. “Sorry, man. Kind of an off day for me.”

“Kind of an off month for you, don’cha think?” Max raises an eyebrow, tone still cheerful. He claps a hand on Ryan’s shoulder. “Gotta turn that frown upside down, man.”

Perry shrugs him off. “I can smile,” he says, a little more defensively that he had intended. “See? I’m smiling now.” He offers Max a smile, but it’s not exactly cheerful. His lips pull tight against his teeth; it looks forced.

Max’s own smile falters a bit. “Man, you’re really gettin’ to be a downer.”

Perry makes his way to the couch and sits down with a huff. “Yeah, yeah. I know. I can’t help it.”

Max scoffs. “Oh, you could help it if you wanted to.” He crosses over to the couch and gives Perry a smack on the back of the head. “This shit’s all in your head, man. You gotta move on. How long has he been gone now? What, two months?”

When Max pauses, Perry realizes he’s supposed to answer that question. He hangs his head. “Yeah. Two months,” he mumbles, rubbing the back of his head.

“Okay! Then time to get your ass back on the market, my friend.” Max beams at him again, face full of smug confidence.

“Max, I don’t really want-”

Max holds his hand up for Perry to stop talking. “Obviously what you want never turns out to be good for you,” he says. “So why don’t you let me worry about what’s quote, ‘good for you’, ‘kay?”

Perry sighs. He doesn’t seem to really have a choice in the matter. “Yeah, I guess.” He isn’t sure whether it’s Max’s incurable optimism or the anxiousness of going out, but his head suddenly starts pounding. He squints slightly at Max. “So where are we going?”
