I found myself in a similar pickle a while back.

What I did was start going to clubs, goth clubs, where an older crowed of people hung out.

I met some very intelligent open minded people.
We discussed a myriad of topics and moral quandaries,
and there is usually some sort BDSM preformiace going on, but no one seems at all shocked, it might as well be the TV in a bar.

Club Run and Club Malediction have some of the most friendly people IMO

Or start going into some other unfamiliar social circle nearby, that's a fair way to get to know more people.

Venice Beach (where I live now) Is filled with interesting odd balls that make great friends.

It is possible to have the best of both worlds, but when in doubt, always take the path that leads to spiritual growth.
