Breathe in. Breathe out.

They say that if two people want to start their lives anew, they would- hands linked and hearts connected- dive headfirst into the deadliest whirlpool of Japan, they are taken far away to a new place with new beginnings with the person they leapt together with. It is however only a myth but the bodies of all the lovers who jumped were never found.

Daehyun should have learned by now that going outside when he should be inside with his tutor at this very moment was thoughtless (ironic how he was now escaping since the last time he skipped out on lessons his father threatened to never let him leave the house again) but he was stubborn and he hated being cooped in for long periods of time. Besides it was just language lessons and what good would that to for him? His older brother was to take over the company anyway and he could handle the boring parts of being boss just fine. Daehyun was just a young 12 year old kid with more important things to do than learn stuff he had no interest in.

As he quickly maneuvered around the maids -sneaking past them for 4 years now gave him quite the experience- he finally made it to his special spot in the garden behind the willow trees where he could probably spend an hour or two until his father gave up on looking for him.

Daehyun happily lays on his stomach, uncaring if his new clothes his mother bought him got dirty and wet from the grass, as he pulls out his drawing pad and ink. While his older brother loved to play sports and go hunting with their father, Daehyun enjoyed just going outside in the sun and drawing the fish in the ponds. He was just about to finish his piece when he hears a 'wow' from behind him. He startles and accidentally knocks his drawing into the water.

"Oh no! Let me get it!" Daehyun hears a splash beside him but he barely has time to look up before his soggy drawing pad is dropped in front of him. He pouts when he sees the mushed up, ruined paper. Tears are about to gather in his eyes when he hears a soft 'don't cry.' Daehyun finally looks up at the intruder and narrows his eyes.

"Who are you?" he asks, backing away a bit. The neighbors don't have a son and not many people live around their estate. The boy was small, maybe around the same age as himself. He had round cheeks and big eyes.

"I'm Youngjae," he says. "My momma made friends with your momma. They told me to come out and find you."

Daehyun still has his lips pursed and his arms crossed with suspicion. He's still a bit upset about his drawing pad. He's about to call for his mom when the boy, Youngjae, reaches out a hand. Daehyun stares at it and then back up at Youngjae's smiling face.

"Wanna be friends?"

Daehyun has to admit he gets lonely. There aren't many boys his age that live around him and he's been homeschooled for his whole life. His parents are barely home; they just buy the newest toys in stock and gift him with anything he ask for and his brother always has 'adult' stuff to do.

He hesitantly lifts his hand and Youngjaes meets his in a clasp halfway.

"So whats your name?" Youngjae asks with a smile. Daehyun thinks he looks kind of fluffy, like a bunny.

"Daehyun," he says shyly.

"Okay, lets go play Daehyun! Tag you're it!" the boy taps Daehyun on the head (making the boy huff) and runs off. Daehyun sits there stunned for a second before giggling as he runs after his new friend, soggy drawing pad forgotten.

It's Daehyun's first invite to a birthday party and an invite not forced by a parent for business connections at that. Daehyun is so happy, he keeps bouncing in the car getting several scoldings from his parents but he doesn't care. He has his present for Youngjae wrapped (not neat in the slightest but he's proud of it) sitting on his lap and he has on his best formal clothes. Youngjae turning 12 was a big deal Daehyun notes. His father has barely parked the car before Daehyun rushes out, ignoring his parents shouts. He knocks politely at the door as he tries to look presentable. Youngjae's mother opens the door with a smile.

"Daehyun, come in, Youngjae's waiting for you," she says as he runs in. He ignores Youngjae's mom's outstretched hands for Youngjae's gift, wanting to personally gift the birthday boy himself.

During the party, Youngjae's mother looks on worriedly at the group of kids. The other kids seem to be playing happily, going from one game to the next but Daehyun and Youngjae sat together in the corner by themselves, their heads touching as they huddled closely, whispering in each other's ears, and laughing merrily.

"How was the party, Daehyun?" Daehyun's father asks on their ride home after sharing a look with his wife.

"It was great! Youngjae taught me how to play cat's cradle!" Daehyun says excitedly, swinging his legs back and forth.

"I see. Did you get to meet Youngjae's other friends?" Daehyun's mother asks.

"No."

His mother turns back to see if Daehyun had anything else to say but the boy just stares absentmindedly out the window.

Daehyun didn't bother want to tell his mom that the other kids are weird and that all he needs is Youngjae.

They're 14 and it's supposed to be the start of their days as high schoolers together but Daehyun is stuck in his room with a cold. His mother is yelling something incoherent outside his room and his father sounds upset but Daehyun can'r really hear anything besides the loud ringing in his ears. Everything feels too hot and he thinks he's going to puke but the only thing he can think of is how is Youngjae's day going. He wonders if he'll make many friends. He wonders if he'll be forgotten. Just that one little thought makes tears run down his cheeks and his lungs feel like collapsing.

"Daehyun, baby…what's wrong?" His mother comes rushing into the room but Daehyun can't stop crying.

"Mom, I want to go to school," he manages to choke out. His mother's face hardens as she sighs and puts down the glass of water she was about to hand him. "I want to see Youngjae."

"Look at you, you think you can make it a day like this?" his mother yells. Daehyun's eyes widen. He didn't expect his mother to get upset over such a simple wish. A 'no' could've sufficed, he thinks bitterly. He pushes the covers off and stumbles off his bed.

"Daehyun, where do you think you're going?" his mother screeches. Daehyun shoves away his mother's hands and stomps to the front door. He's strong enough he thinks. Strong. Step. Step. Stumble. His vision's fading. Youngjae's waiting for me. He said we'd go together.

Blurring, blurring, dark.

It feels like he's been sleeping for more than a day when he opens his eyes. His head's pounding and he feels like the slightest sound will make his head explode.

"Daehyun, Youngjae's here to see you," his mother says as she lets the other boy in. Daehyun sits up immediately and musters up a smile.

"How was your first day?" Daehyun reluctantly asks just to be polite. He waits to hear Youngjae boast about all the new friends he made and how great his classes were but Youngjae didn't do any of that. He waits patiently for Youngjae to talk. The boy just holds his hand and smiles.

"Nothing eventful. I was just worried about you," he says. Daehyun brightens up a bit at that. Youngjae chuckles and thinks he saw the color come back to the bedridden boy's pale face.

"Let's go together when you're better okay?" Daehyun has never felt happier hearing those words.

Youngjae and Daehyun spend the majority of their adolescent years together. There was never Youngjae if there wasn't a Daehyun and people would always say the two could never be separated. Youngjae's parents have long given up trying to get them to play with others. They were happier this way. To just spend time with each other brought a smile to their faces.

There were times when they were the loudest kids on the block, yelling at each other, playing pranks on Daehyun's brother before he moved away to college, and chasing fireflies around their house, spreading their laughter across the whole neighborhood. And then there were times they just sat together near the fireplace, no conversations needed as they just sat by each other, fingers curled and legs overlapped.

They didn't make many other friends. When one of them got sick, the other became bedridden too just so they wouldn't have to go to school without the other.

"Daehyun, promise me you won't find anyone better than me," Youngjae whispers one night when they were in bed together.

Daehyun murmurs back a half awake "sure".

"Daehyun, promise me."

"Ngh."

"Daehyunnie."

"I already said yeah."

Youngjae laughs and shakes his head, fondly brushing Daehyun's bangs back.

"Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Youngjae."

"i love you."

They're 17 when Youngjae first meets Himchan, and things went sour quick. Daehyun still needed private lessons back at home and his parents, seeing that his previous tutor wasn't doing him any good, hired a brand new tutor. A young man named Himchan. Himchan was a graduated student, very smart and witty and he loved teaching. He was especially fond of Daehyun who although was slower than the other kids in school had a very bright personality and will to learn. That didn't sit well with Youngjae. Daehyun was always the clingier one with the younger but that didn't mean he didn't feel a strong attachment to the older either. He was equally as possessive.

Times when he and Daehyun were supposed to go by the lake to feed the ducks or ride their bikes until sunset were replaced with "Sorry I have to meet Himchan hyung today!" or "I need to go over these lessons Himchan hyung gave me." Youngjae has never felt this much anger before. He is bitter and upset and he doesn't know how to cope with these feelings other than to lash out at every person who tries to console him. He feels like he's been cheated.

He can see the look of adoration Daehyun gives to Himchan and even though he knows Himchan has a partner, one that occasionally comes by the house to visit, he still can't help feeling he's losing the only thing that brings him joy.

Youngjae doesn't really do anything about his envy towards the other but right until one day he sees Himchan brushing a strand of hair from Daehyun's face. He doesn't remember much after that.

"He just attacked him out of nowhere. This has really gotten out of hand, what should we do?"

Youngjae hears them conversing with hushed voices but he could still hear every word. He presses the ice pack onto his blackened eye and hissed. Himchan must've really hit him hard.

"I think this settles it." The door opens and Youngjae quickly sits up straight. His mother looks at him as if she knew he was eavesdropping but she doesnt say a word as she passed him and into her room. Youngjae knows he's has upset more people than Himchan today. He could still remember the look of shock on Daehyun's face as he jumped on the older man.

Youngjae's parents decided to move to Japan. His father has gotten a new business deal but didn't want to uproot his family to move but after the whole ordeal his parents seem to think that it may be a good idea after all. Youngjae never left his room after that. His parents suspected he snuck out the window to visit Daehyun but they haven't caught him in the act as of yet.

Daehyun, the ever bright and lovely boy, went back to the quiet, withdrawn kid he was before he met Youngjae. He wouldn't speak to his parents and refused to see Himchan again.

Both parents felt guilty that they have reduced such good friendship into this but there was no other choice. Both boys can start new lives and make new friends and expand their horizons. All they ever knew was each other. They'll find other friends; this will be healthier for them.

Youngjae's mother thought it was weird Daehyun wasn't there to send him off at the airport. After all, they were each other's best friend and some would say soul mates. She figured maybe Youngjae already gave his goodbyes and thought no less of it.

"You can visit Daehyun whenever you like'd, okay sweetie? So don't be too upset."

"I'm not."

another look of surprise.

"You're not?"

"No. I'm going to see him soon anyway."

"Oh…okay then sweetie," his mom says as she reluctantly leaves him alone in his room. Youngjae looks down at the photograph of him and Daehyun by the beach. He smiles before tucking it in the book in his hands.

"After all we said we'd go together."

Daehyun had never really known a life without Youngjae and he can't imagine continuing a life without Youngjae. Youngjae is the only person he has ever known, mind, body and soul. He can't ignore the heartache he felt when Youngjae moved miles away. He barely paid attention in his lessons anymore. Himchan still tried to keep up with being his tutor but seeing him now reminds him of the day it all fell apart. He hadn't even heard Youngjae come in. Daehyun was just doing his lessons as usual, barely even feeling the brushing back of his bangs from Himchan's hand when he hears a loud curse and a tumble. He looks up in surprise to see Youngjae straddling his tutor and trying to get a punch in his face. Himchan had the upper hand; it was obvious with the way Youngjae struggled against his hold and was easily flipped over.

Tears sprang to Daehyun's eyes when he saw the bruise Youngjae got on his eye after Himchan accidentally knocked him out by trying to restrain him.

He could hear his parents arguing about him and Youngjae again and he really doesn't understand why. There is nothing wrong with him and Youngjae. How hard was it for them to understand that one completes the other? All the essays Himchan has helped him write were about Youngjae. Every art piece he starts embodies a piece of Youngjae. He has wrapped himself inside Daehyun's heart and lungs, tight like vines and slowly taking his breath away but Daehyun embraces it.

It's too late to stop it now.

"Youngjae? Baby, I made dinner. You must be hungry." Youngjae's mother knocks on the door but there was no response. He must be sleeping, she says to herself. A small sense of panic rises in her chest but it must be nothing. She twists open the knob and looks inside. "Youngjae?"

There was no one in his room. Everything was packed neatly away, not a single thing looking out of place except for the book laying in the middle of his bed.

Her hands shake as she picks it up and looks at the title.

The Red String of Fate

There were notes in Youngjae's handwriting scribbled all across the pages.

There is an invisible red string connected at the pinky finger of two soulmates. With it, the two people will always find their way to each other.

Destined lovers torn apart from each other by unfortunate circumstances tend to find themselves on the bridge above the deadliest whirlpool in Japan. When they leap together-

The book falls from her hands.

because no matter how far we're separated i'll always make my way back to you

He turns and looks at Daehyun, already looking at him with the one look no one else has ever given him. Youngjae takes a deep breath and tries to take in this moment of Daehyun, only Daehyun, (because who else would he be willing to jump into deadly waters with?) sweet, sweet, lovely Daehyun looking at him like he's the world with the wind blowing his hair and the crack of dawn lighting his face. He reaches over and links their pinkies together. Daehyun looks at their intertwined fingers and back up at him with a smile. The distance between the bridge and the raging waters doesn't seem so far anymore. After this, they'll be happy. They can start over with each other.
They can finally go together.

"Ready?"

"Ready."
They jumped.
