A works best for Kazuki for a MILLION AND ONE REASONS, but the main is that he wouldn't be expecting an attack that way. :|b

UH AS FOR TRAUMATIC PAST... I guess just him getting separated from Haruki works.

Oh, right, trauma. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW!

-his village getting burnt down
-his mother dying to protect him during that BURNING VILLAGE ATTACK (this one's headcanon)
-getting BRAINWASHED by the Dai Li
-dying via Long Feng's GIANT ROCK COCK
-Zuko dying during the first Masque event when he couldn't do anything (camp!)

I'd lean toward A. I'm not really bothered by there not being much of a fight, but I'd feel wrong letting someone sneak up on Neji.

Recent past has mostly been boring and dominated by relationship angst. Awkward conversations for the most part, though a little snapping and fighting gets in there. Childhood trauma involves seeing his father have his seal activated--basically just a little kid being traumatized by seeing his father helpless and in pain, clutching his head. Also being told his father had died for the good of the clan.

And I should be fine with threading or not threading. Whichever ends up easier at the time.

B works better for Katou. Somebody's already tried A, and he's not likely to fall for it a second time.

Katou's tragic childhood is basically that whole chapter there. More recent past involves dying a whole bunch of times. And that was before camp.
