I met an old friend for coffee at Starbucks on Elgin St.

As much as I would have ( Read more... )

NO! I've greatly improved my swing (ie not as far but it won't go in the general direction of tennis courts... cough) and I'm looking forward to breaking out my vintage clubs for a round or two!

The psyc comment was from an experiement involving a "Bobo" doll, is that what it was called? Anyways Dr. Haddad suggested exersize as another form to release stress, but warned against the use of Bobo dolls (as you're actually hitting it and visualizing whoever stressed you out) hence the actual aggression...

Don't get me wrong, I <3 Combat, except for the tri-cep dips the little crazy Chinese lady makes us do... ugh...

I know the study you're talking about (I think it was Bandura, but I could be wrong about the name... It's one of the biggies in social psyc, like Milgram or Zimbardo), but the difference is that in combat you're not actually hitting things. Aggression can perpetuate aggression, yes, but only if it's actual aggression (i.e., with the intent to hurt someone; if you do combat and imagine you're beating up some random attacker, that's fine; it's if you're picturing someone specific who you know, and you're imagining kicking the shit out of them that there's a problem), and you don't see the cycle as much if someone's hitting air (as opposed to people/things ( ... )

that's it! Bandura's Bobo doll... well it was different in actual karate class where you had targets to actually hit... which is why I like Combat!
